Schafer Gear Works in South Bend completed 40 Sweeps, two RIEs and two JDIs in 2024. RIEs focused on supply, cost and receiving, with cross-functional teams finding improvements. The team delivered efficiency gains by eliminating duplicate logs, unnecessary scanning, identifying backups and moving receiving to the plant floor. They also improved supplier consistency, reduced costs and enhanced machine ergonomics, resulting in material cost reductions, reduced forging lead times and lower shipping costs. Great job team!?

Meet Dave! A 26-year veteran of Schafer South Bend, Dave has dedicated his career to mastering the intricacies of CNC lathes. His journey began in a small aerospace machine shop, where he honed his skills on manual machines, building a strong foundation in the machining process. Dave appreciates the dynamic environment at Schafer, where every day brings new processes, diverse parts, and varied customers. He values the company's commitment to maintaining a safe working environment and providing steady work. His career advice to others: "Stick with your goals and strive to maintain a positive attitude." Outside of work, Dave enjoys woodworking, wood turning?and building projects.?He tries to fish as much as possible and keeps a vegetable garden in the summer. For 40 years, he's shared his life with his wife, Nancy, and together they've raised four children and welcomed five grandsons. We're proud to have Dave as a valued member of the Schafer team.

From Patterson Gear & Machine to Schafer Industries, Dale’s commitment to growth and excellence has never wavered. He’s worked through numerous transitions, embracing challenges and teamwork along the way. Dale’s advice to others? “Give your best every day and be open to learning something new.” When he’s not in the shop, you’ll find him with his wife, kids, grandkids, or cheering on the Packers. ?? Dale’s favorite Schafer value is Continuous Improvement, which has kept him on the cutting edge of machining. We’re proud to have him on the team as he approaches retirement in 2025! ??
