We’re proud of our Maternal Child and Family Health staffers BEVERLEY WHITE-MACKLIN, Shilpa Joshi, Tonya Robinson, Kamilah Davis, Kenisha Makau, and Kitty Zhou, MPH for bringing awareness to an important reproductive health issue in our African/African Ancestry community. The team wrote, “The Black Maternal Health Crisis,” an article that was published in Santa Clara County Medical Association’s official magazine The Bulletin (see article link). https://lnkd.in/gNtDWEGR The article reports that “[a]cross California, African/African Ancestry women are 3 to 7 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic, and White women.” To see how we're responding and for information about the Black Infant Health program, visit https://lnkd.in/gkudGVn7. Marissa knows that it isn't always easy for people who use drugs to ask for help. It makes all the difference when someone else takes that first step to show up for them. That's how Marissa describes her work for the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department ’s Sexual Health and Harm Reduction Program (https://lnkd.in/gd7_9GSJ). Marissa and her team don't just offer supplies and resources, but connection without judgment, accepting people at any stage in their substance use. This focus on stigma-free health and wellness is at the heart of SHHRP’s harm reduction approach. Many thanks to our partners at Shatterproof (https://lnkd.in/emH_7D9) for helping SHHRP get the word out to local residents that support is available. We knew Brandon was a star, but now he’s officially a star among stars! We have the?? STAR Award?? to prove it. California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO) and the National Association of Telecommunications Officers awarded County of Santa Clara Public Health Department ?? 1st?place ?? for the video series “Brandon in the Lab” in the Health-Public/Mental category. This is the award for the very best of the best videos from government agencies all across the states of California and Nevada. Are we really all that surprised after seeing the entertaining and educational series Oscar Arguello put together with Brandon and his team? The?series features a behind the scenes look?at the Public Health lab and features expert Brandon Bonin, Director of the Public Health Laboratory. It’s quick, funny, nerdy, and very science-y. And people seem to love it! Each episode focuses on a different topic, including pathogens, genomic sequencing and the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and bio protection. If you haven’t watched the mini-series, watch it on Public Health’s YouTube channel:?https://lnkd.in/gUXjhzP2 #publichealth #science #laboratory #capio
