In Santa Clara County, these efforts are making a remarkable impact, with 82% of overdose reversals reported in the county attributed to their harm reduction program. Santa Clara County Outreach Specialist Markis Derr says, “Harm reduction is a deeply personal and professional commitment to supporting people in the ways they need most, without judgment or stigma. It’s about saving lives, restoring dignity, and creating pathways for healing and change—however that looks for each person.”? We’re proud of our Tuberculosis (TB) Control Officer Ann Loeffler, Health Officer Sara Cody, and Deputy Health Officer Sarah Rudman Rudman, for bringing awareness to an important health equity issue in our community. The article, “Addressing Health Inequities in the Fight Against Tuberculosis” was published in the Santa Clara County Medical Association’s official magazine The Bulletin (https://lnkd.in/gCXHS6dA) The article reports that “[i]n 2023, 95% of Santa Clara County TB cases were born outside United States, with Vietnam and the Philippines contributing almost half of our cases.” The article also shares how communication, education, and prevention can help, as well as action steps that providers can take to decrease the development of TB. Dr. Rudman is on the ground at the state capitol to talk with legislators about why they need to protect funding for local public health departments. State and federal funds are crucial to keeping services running and the workforce strong. Your local health public health department in Santa Clara County relies on state funding for oral health, immunizations, tobacco prevention, California Children's Services, STD prevention, and so much more. ? Federal funding allows public health departments to deliver programs for our residents, including WIC and nutrition education and opioid overdose prevention and response.
