Here's a look at the recent Regional Compliance & Ethics Conference by Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE) and DIFC Academy that provided a fantastic opportunity for local compliance professionals to gain valuable insights and education! Attendees were treated to the latest updates on regulatory requirements, enforcement trends, and best practices for building and maintaining robust compliance and ethics programs. The sessions, led by seasoned experts, covered a wide range of pertinent topics, from general compliance measures to advanced risk management strategies. Participants not only enhanced their knowledge but also earned live Compliance Certification Board (CCB)? continuing education units (CEUs). The conference also offered a wonderful networking platform, allowing professionals to connect and share experiences with peers in their region. This morning, Melinda Shapiro, Esq., CCEP and I had a wonderful time talking about the critical role of Risk Assessments (RA) in determining compliance risks with HCCA members. Few highlights: §?Results of your RA are foundational for the creation of your Auditing & Monitoring Plan (in addition to your top industry risks, or identified via regulatory reqs, investigation findings, compliance reporting data, etc.). §?Leverage your RA trends/data for adequacy of resources (additional FTEs, higher salary, etc.). §?Key scores – overall risk score and control score, both are critical scores to have in your Risk Register. Measure the likelihood and impact.?There will always be high risk areas (e.g., cybersecurity, likelihood and impact are high), and for those, you want to ensure your control score is also high to demonstrate you are managing and have the tools or key internal controls in place (P&P, regular training, monitoring, etc.) §?Compliance Programs with no RA function is ineffective. Period! This is your due diligence to better PREVENT – DETECT – RESOLVE and report non-compliance or criminal conduct. Often time, an effective compliance program is recommended as a condition of probation. Take a proactive, rather than a reactive approach!
