Lucius Laffitte and Paige Ornduff of Gallivan, White & Boyd, P.A. recently spoke with two groups of fourth-grade gifted students at Harborview Elementary in Charleston, SC. Gifted & Talented Program teacher Staci Reed invited Laffitte and Ornduff to discuss the importance of law and the role of lawyers as part of a unit on law. “Speaking with these students was a perfect reminder of how important (and rewarding) it is to get out in the community and share how great the legal profession can be,” Ornduff said. The students enjoyed hearing from Laffitte and Ornduff and learning more about the legal profession. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: "On February 17, 1975, the South Carolina Supreme Court adopted rules creating and establishing the South Carolina Bar. The new rules provided that all lawyers would be members of the organization and stated, 'No person shall engage in the practice of law in the State of South Carolina who is not licensed by this court and a member in good standing of the South Carolina Bar.' The Transcript’s headlines announced, 'And Now There is One,' and reported that, “the South Carolina Bar Association and the State Bar passed into history and the South Carolina Bar born. James Parham, who had been President-elect of the South Carolina State Bar, served a six month term as the first President of the South Carolina Bar. Following Parham’s six month term, Claude Scarborough became President of the South Carolina Bar. Thus, the merger was complete, a debate which began in 1934 concluded, and all lawyers of South Carolina became unified in one Bar." Today's #SaturdayShoutout goes out to Malissa Burnette, a founding partner at Burnette Shutt & McDaniel. Malissa recently received the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association Jean Hoefer Toal Award, an honor the organization rarely bestows. Burnette is only the fourth attorney recognized since the program began in 2014. Former Chief Justice Toal received the award in its first year, Elaine Fowler was honored in 2015, and Inez Moore Tenenbaum was honored in 2022. The SCWLA describes the award as recognizing “professional excellence and notable career achievement characterized by the championship of causes affecting women” and honoring “visionaries and pioneers whose careers demonstrate longstanding and groundbreaking public service, commitment to the advancement of women and the cause of justice, as well as a history of leadership in the legal community.” Congratulations!
