关于我们
SCAPE is a design-driven landscape architecture and urban design studio based in New York, New Orleans, and San Francisco. We believe landscape architecture can enable positive change in communities through the creation of regenerative living infrastructure and public landscapes. We work to integrate natural cycles and systems into environments across all scales, from the urban pocket-park to the regional ecological plan. We do this through diverse forms of landscape architecture – built landscapes, planning frameworks, research, books, and installations – with the ultimate goal of connecting people to their immediate environment and creating dynamic and adaptive landscapes of the future. Our staff is experienced in landscape architecture, architecture, urban design, and planning, and we integrate these skillsets to practice design as interpreters and synthetic thinkers. We lead and work with teams of engineers and architects on complex projects, from stormwater streetscapes to large public pedestrian infrastructure, translating technical expertise into legible and engaging public space. We also believe in working with communities and stakeholders to translate complex visions into realizable actions. We work with clients to ensure that design concept remains intact through the process of building landscapes. To achieve solid, high-performance public urban landscapes, we combine new technologies with tried and true construction techniques. We aim to create public landscapes of lasting significance, reconnecting neighborhood infrastructure and habitats for generations to come. Our work and collaborations have led to several national awards, including the Buckminster Fuller Challenge Winner, two national American Society of Landscape Architects awards, and several NY American Society of Landscape Architects Awards. In 2017, founder and principal Kate Orff was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow, and in 2019 SCAPE was awarded the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award.

Read about China Basin Park and Mission Rock in Metropolis Magazine: "The park serves as the feature amenity for tenants of the new development, but it’s also a popular attraction for visitors, especially around game (or other event) time. (It’s easily accessible via an existing drawbridge spanning McCovey Cove.) So it does a lot of heavy lifting, via a lively mix of uses that are at once distinct and connected. Holistic, not overwhelming. It’s an Olmstedian approach brought to the present, and the future." –Sam Lubell
Mission Rock: San Francisco’s Waterfront Future. Developed as a public-private partnership between the San Francisco Giants, Tishman Speyer, and the Port of San Francisco, it’s far more ambitious than most cities’ stadium-adjacent developments (aka Ballpark Villages), featuring office and residential buildings designed by?MVRDV,?Studio Gang,?WORKac, and?HENNING LARSEN ARCHITECTS SL; 40 percent affordable housing units; and active ground floor uses, highlighted by local retail favorites like Arsicault Bakery, Ikes Love & Sandwiches, and Proper Food.?The newest piece, tying the project together and connecting it to San Francisco Bay, is the 5-acre China Basin Park, designed by New York-based?SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC, whose local office is just around the corner. Their park, connected to the larger development via textured pedestrian paseos jutting between buildings, opens Mission Rock to stunning views of the stadium and the Bay Bridge—but it also protects it from quickly-emerging tidal threats via a soft, flexible approach that is slowly (perhaps too slowly) gaining steam in the U.S. “Business as usual is the sheet pile bulkhead,” says Orff. “How do you make that space between building and water something that is fluid and flexible, but understand that’s not a fixed edge?” https://lnkd.in/ep_WYTwH

After years of planning and construction, the East Hall Plaza has reopened ahead of the fall semester, creating a new space for the Pratt community to host events and foster dialogues across disciplines. SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC?led the redesign and worked with local fabricators to select special brick, metal, and stone, while JRM Construction Management managed the construction of the plaza and central plant. Pratt’s East Hall Plaza is now open to students! In Pratt Institute’s East Hall, historic boilers have been replaced with high efficiency models as part of the Institute’s broader plan to reduce its overall carbon and energy usage. This presented an opportunity to create a new plaza: what was once an empty hardscape is now a dynamic gathering space that reflects the creative artistry of Pratt’s student body. The plaza emphasizes craftsmanship, celebrating the making process that happens every day on campus. The design is inspired by Pratt's historic and industrial aesthetic using a unique combination of brick, metal, and stone. With sustainability at the core of the design, East Hall Plaza will capture all stormwater runoff through detailed micro-grading and a trench drain system at the edge of the plaza. The finished plaza will serve as a healthy, relaxing space for students that inspires creativity year-round, creating a key new open space for the Institute. ?? On a sunny July day in Brooklyn, SCAPE Senior Designer Ciara Stein took a walk—a hot one. She found that the surface of a playground was a scorching 154 °F, sidewalks were 133 °F, artificial turf was 137 °F, and cobblestone was 115 °F. Just a few feet away in the shade, sidewalk and paved plaza surface temperatures dropped to 90 °F, and grassy areas to 89 °F. High surface temperatures and heat indexes carried into the night, preventing people from finding life-critical cooling. Through SCAPE’s second annual SEED research grant program, Ciara captured surface conditions, heat index, and wind velocity while on heat walks through Brooklyn during peak sun hours and after sunset. After walking a total of over 15 miles, she compiled the data into three 32-foot-long accordion books. The fieldwork provided insights into how we can promote cooling through tree canopy, strategic planting, multi-scalar parks, wind corridors, and material selections. Most importantly, it evidenced the need to integrate shade and cooling into existing social patterns. As temperatures rise, landscape interventions can play a vital role in keeping communities cool! Stay tuned for recaps from the other SEED research projects.
