This Black History Month, the SEMI Career & Apprenticeship Network Arizona (SCAN) honors the contributions made by trailblazers like Dr. Patricia Bath. Dr. Patricia Bath invented a new device and technique for cataract surgery, the laserphaco probe. She received a patent for the laserphaco in 1988 and was the first Black woman doctor to receive a medical patent. Dr. Bath was also the first Black woman to complete a residency in ophthalmology. Throughout her career, Dr. Bath held a total of five patents, and in 1977, she founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, an organization whose mission is to protect, preserve, and restore the gift of sight. At the SEMI Career & Apprenticeship Network (SCAN) Arizona, we celebrate the advances made by leaders like Dr. Bath and seek to create training and educational opportunities that make a career in the semiconductor industry accessible to all.
