Startup World Cup 2024 Grand Finale was held in San Francisco on October 4th. Regional champions from 84 countries and regions gathered to deliver their pitches to a 3,000+ audience. The company that won the world champion title was EarthGrid (https://earthgrid.io), the representative of the Silicon Valley region. This is the first time that the representative from the Silicon Valley region has won the world championship. EarthGrid has developed a plasma drilling robot to enable the underground transmission of clean energy. The second place went to Alternō (https://alterno.net), the representative from the Vietnam regional, and the third place went to ivWatch (https://www.ivwatch.com), the representative from the Virginia Beach, USA regional. Also, Robert Herjavec from ABC Shark Tank, Jeffrey Welser (COO of IBM Research), Richard Kerris (VP of Developer Relations at NVIDIA), Suzanne DiBianca (Chief Impact Officer of Salesforce), Arvind KC (Chief People & Systems Officer of ROBLOX), and other executives from leading global companies, as well as entrepreneurs pioneering the innovation industry delivered remarkable speeches at the event. A caution to SaaS startup founders with $1M ARR... ?? Having 1M ARR doesn’t mean you’re ready to scale. Most founders and VCs assume that 1M in revenue means a company is ready to hire more salespeople and invest more in their marketing programs. This stems from the common SaaS benchmark: $1M ARR = Product Market Fit And while I think it’s a good rule of thumb, it comes with a critical condition: ?? The revenue must come from the SAME customer segment. If your revenue doesn’t meet this condition at 1M ARR, it’s a signal that you DO NOT have product market fit. Instead, what you have is initial traction towards 5 different versions of product market fit. (See Company A in image) And you’re NOT ready to scale. —— Whether you’re a VC or a founder, remember… ?? Scaling beyond $1M ARR is all about REPEATABILITY in your sales and marketing programs. And these programs are hard to build out — even for a single customer segment. So when you reach $1M ARR, take a good hard look at where your revenue is coming from BEFORE you invest in sales and marketing to get to 3M ARR. ??
