Do we as consumers need to worry about the tools that can help us to personalize and deliver better self-care??For example, if you knew that your microbiome or GI issues and their resulting mucosal damage might predispose you to Parkinson's, would you take steps to prevent that damage? Better yet, would you test your DNA to assess your risk? A new article in The Atlantic suggests that consumers may need to be cautious about DNA testing. According to The Atlantic, it's perfectly legal for health insurers and life insurance underwriters to use your DNA against you and refuse coverage. (Akin to how insurers might use your blood test results to determine your risk for other diseases.)?DNA testing can be an effective healthcare diagnostic tool.?Testing for the BRCA gene has saved many lives with patients choosing to undergo preventative surgeries to avoid breast cancer. But what if genetic testing only tells you that you're at risk for a disease without providing a path for preventative solutions? Improving self-care will require new technology (diagnostic) solutions.?It's important that industry enable technology to aid self-care while maintaining privacy so as not to discourage, deter or delay treatment.?What are your thoughts? https://lnkd.in/e7Pr78DA

Every year, TIME’s Best Inventions highlight the most impactful new products and ideas, spanning from world’s largest computer chip to a bioluminescent houseplant.?Increasingly, inventions also empower greater consumer self-care.?As a team that works to develop and implement the future of self-care, we're excited to have contributed to at least one of the projects on TIME list.?Here are a few noteworthy examples: ? -AstraZeneca FluMist – The first at-home vaccine to prevent influenza via a nasal spray for anyone under age 50.?Beginning in 2025, consumers can order FluMist online, have it delivered, and easily administer the vaccine to themselves or their children. -Dexcom’s Stelo – The first glucose wearable device designed for people with Type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes who are not using insulin.?Stelo shows users when their glucose levels spike and suggests ways to minimize glucose fluctuations. -Daye Diagnostic Tampons – These tampons test for bacteria, fungi, STIs, and vaginal microbiome makeup, enabling women to self-test at home followed by an HCP video consultation. ? Imagine a future where consumers can quickly recognize health and wellness products tailored to their specific needs, just as shoppers rely on gluten-free and vegan symbols for guidance. For women of a certain life stage, this future is already here with GenM's launch of the MTick symbol, which helps identify menopause-friendly products that meet specific quality and support standards. Since its introduction in 2022, the MTick has become a trusted symbol in the UK, assisting women to find products that cater to their menopause-related needs, whether in supplements, skincare or lifestyle items. Recently, Colgate teamed up with GenM to launch a dental care line in the UK specifically designed for menopausal women by addressing unique oral health challenges that can arise during this life stage. The product line, which will be marked with MTick symbol, includes the Total Advance Gum Care Toothpaste,?which offers 24-hour gum protection and relief for sensitive teeth, thus targeting common concerns like gum sensitivity and tooth loss, which affects many post-menopausal women. Is specialized labeling like the MTick symbol a helpful tool for mass personalization to help consumers identify products that meet their specific health needs??GenM has plans to broaden the MTick’s reach so perhaps we will see this symbol (and others?!) in the not-too-distant future in the US market. https://lnkd.in/eu7C5txi

But,?there’s a lot more to do to provide women the complete suite of care they need.?We see an untapped (and much needed) market opportunity.?Who in the self-care industry is going to take the lead and own’ the 4th trimester? https://lnkd.in/guJRvKkp

How do you get your prescriptions? No one likes to wait in line for their prescriptions but sometimes you need your medicine right away. Pretty soon, it might be more difficult to pick up those prescriptions. This past week, Walgreens announced that they will shutter 1,200 stores over the next three years as the company aims to shed unprofitable stores despite better-than-expected sales across the drugstore chain in the latest quarter. The cost-cutting move will undoubtedly impact access to pharmacies and is likely to hurt urban and rural consumers who depend on Walgreens to fill their prescriptions. Yet just last week, Amazon announced that it is expanding same-delivery medication delivery to nearly half of the United States in 2025 and plans to open 20 pharmacies in 20 new cities next year.?In addition to Amazon Pharmacy, with its One Medical, Amazon will likely be reshaping consumers' access to healthcare as we know it.?Will Amazon be successful where Walgreen's failed? https://lnkd.in/eRDjdXrR

Imagine your home as a health hub, providing not just comfort, but also the ability to effectively manage your family's health. Thanks to breakthroughs in technology, this vision is now becoming a reality. Consumers can monitor health conditions, refill prescriptions, and even administer vaccines, such as the recently approved self-administered FluMist nasal spray—all without leaving their homes. FluMist, the first self-administered flu vaccine, offers a needle-free solution that can be used at home following a screening process. Though FluMist has been available in doctors' offices for over 20 years, this new option provides unprecedented convenience by allowing adults to order the nasal spray through an online pharmacy for themselves or their children. While a doctor’s prescription is still required, the ability to self-administer eliminates the need for an office visit. This at-home option is convenient and expands access to preventative care, particularly for those consumers with needle phobia or anxiety about medical settings. For those patients who work long or odd hours, there is no need to find time to visit the pharmacy or clinic.?Additionally, FluMist offers a crucial lifeline for people living in healthcare deserts, where access to doctors and clinics is limited. By making essential treatments available directly at home, we can come closer to realizing this health hub vision and offer a more inclusive approach to public health. https://lnkd.in/gNCZFgJb

Have you heard of tadpole water and sleepy girl mocktails? No, these aren't the drink specials at your local watering hole - these are examples of health trends that have gone viral on TikTok. A recent survey by Zing Coach found that 56% of Gen Z use TikTok for wellness, diet and fitness advice. This survey suggests that many Gen Zers use TikTok as their main source for health advice without verifying or fact-checking information. Additionally, the average TikTok video length is 35 seconds, which could result in the over-simplification of complex health issues and context?which is critical for understanding the nuance of medical advice. While Gen Z's trust in TikTok is worrisome, it's important to understand this preference and leverage Gen Z's use of TikTok for health information by developing educational and entertaining content that is accurate and trustworthy. Branded content can be developed that: 1. incorporates TikTok trends into product education, 2. highlights a partnership with health influencers, and 3. fact-checks viral trends. The key, however, is to be relatable and transparent to develop trust.?Because the continued ability for consumers to trust information about nonprescription drugs and dietary supplements is vitally important to our industry. https://lnkd.in/e9uVS7cG
