Should corrosion be a concern for your helical pier foundation? Probably not... After almost a decade in the helical pier industry, we still get questions from folks who are curious about the longevity of a helical pier foundation. Their primary concern is whether a helical pier might rust prematurely, particularly in 'corrosive' soils. The answer is yes, technically, at some point all helical piers will rust to the point of structural failure if left alone (as all steel does). In practice that will be decades, even more than a century, into the future. Some soils may be more conducive to corrosion due to moisture levels, resistivity, and other factors, but this typically doesn't have a practical impact on lifespan (unless it's highly corrosive). Even in very corrosive soils, there are ways to protect helical piers such as sacrificial thickness (our preferred solution) or galvanized coatings. For the majority of structures, it's more likely that everything ↑above↑ ground will deteriorate before the foundation ↓below↓. So, take confidence in the longevity of a helical pier foundation!
