We couldn’t be more proud of our CEO, Debby Slack Cherney for continuing to champion the “why” behind what we do at SBCERA and the impact it has on so many people.?They are our bottom line and our commitment to them is why we’re here. “From her insights on uncertainty and opportunity in the markets, to her conversation with California State Treasurer Fiona Ma about housing, policy, and DEI, Debby brought her whole self to the event—and spoke with clarity about what leadership really means.” — ALTS #ALTSLA #MarketGroupALTS #AlternativeInvestments
“We can talk about sophisticated investments all day—but at the end of the day, it’s my team that’s helping families through the worst moments of their lives. That’s why we’re here.” – Debby Slack Cherney, CEO, SBCERA At #ALTSLA, Debby reminded us that the “why” behind alternative investing is about much more than alpha. It’s about outcomes—for the people who depend on pension systems to support their families, their futures, and, in some cases, their healing. From her insights on uncertainty and opportunity in the markets, to her conversation with California State Treasurer Fiona Ma about housing, policy, and DEI, Debby brought her whole self to the event—and spoke with clarity about what leadership really means. More interviews from the sidelines of #ALTSLA coming soon. This week, SBCERA’s Senior Investment Officers Amit Thanki, CAIA and Jake Abbott, CFA represented our team at the AltsLA conference, contributing their insights on the evolving private credit landscape. Amit Thanki moderated a dynamic panel exploring the macroeconomic and geopolitical forces shaping private credit. The discussion addressed key questions: Are investors moving into riskier segments of the market? Where is risk being adequately compensated? And what are the unexpected drivers of yield across sub-asset classes? Jake Abbott participated as a panelist in a thought-provoking session on opportunistic credit. The panel examined how seasoned investors are navigating today’s high interest rate environment and slowing economic growth, with a focus on distressed-debt and special-situations strategies designed to mitigate default risk while targeting strong returns. We’re proud to see our investment team contributing to important conversations that shape the future of alternative investments. #MarketsGroup #CFASocietyLosAngeles #CAIAAssociation #CalALTs #WIIIN #ALTSLA
