Apprentices from all three cohorts of the Modern Youth Apprenticeship (MYA) program gathered bright and early last Saturday for a special session focusing on mental health awareness. In addition to sharing resources for mental health support and apps for well-being, apprentices took time to reconnect with one another and discuss their work and school experiences. The Modern Youth Apprenticeship (MYA) program recruitment season is in full swing for Buffalo Public School seniors in 9 participating high schools. A recent MYA informational panel discussion at Hutch-Tech High School was a full circle moment for Cohort 2 apprentices Antonio Hatch (middle) and LaNiiah Woods (left), both of Hutch-Tech’s graduating Class of 2023. Antonio, a Member Contact Service Apprentice at AAA of Western and Central New York and LaNiiah, a Customer Services Apprentice at M&T Bank, returned to their alma mater to share their MYA experience and answer prospective apprentices’ questions about the program. We are so proud of our apprentices not only for their accomplishments at work and in school but also for their dedication to helping welcome and support new apprentices into the program. Say Yes Buffalo’s Workforce Development Department is excited to introduce Icheiry ‘Shaydi’ Rivera as the Mentor Supervisor and an Apprentice Success Coach for CareerWise Greater Buffalo’s Modern Youth Apprenticeship (MYA) program. In addition to providing compassionate support to apprentices for the duration of the apprenticeship, Shaydi trains and champions mentors within the apprentices’ organizations to provide internal guidance to help apprentices smoothly transition into and navigate the ins and outs of the professional working world. Career Coaches work within 9 participating Buffalo Public high schools to identify, recruit, and prepare seniors in good standing for the MYA application and interview process. They provide career counselling and professional development opportunities during the recruitment cycle, host family engagement events to support families through the apprenticeship application process, and collaborate with the Education Manager and Apprentice Success Coaches to ensure a smooth transition for students into their apprenticeships.
