Empowerment is costly. To truly empower someone requires we cede a portion of our power to them. ... We are limited beings. Every one of us has limited time, limited energy, limited perspective, limited assets...no matter the quantity of those limited resources. Hence, we have limited 'power' (from a Latin root meaning 'ability'). And because to 'empower' another is literally to put power 'in' them, when we do so we necessarily have less power in our personal portfolio of limited resources. But, that's a good thing. It is at the root of every virtue and ethic for flourishing humans have yet identified. It is how we prevent power from corrupting, and unleash it for redemptive thriving.
