Last week, our CEO Dr Jo Shaw, attended the United For Wildlife Global Summit in Cape Town, where Jo had the privilege of moderating a panel alongside other inspiring female conservation leaders. The discussion highlighted the importance of resilience and collaboration to reach success in protecting these magnificent creatures, from innovative anti-poaching strategies to groundbreaking community initiatives, all driving toward a future where rhinos thrive in the wild. ? A key theme at the Summit was the vital role of nature protectors, especially the 286,000 rangers working tirelessly worldwide. Despite facing immense challenges, their work is often under appreciated and under resourced. As governments pledge to protect at least 30% of land and sea by 2030, the contributions of wildlife rangers and local communities are more crucial than ever. ? A huge thank you to United for Wildlife for organising this pivotal event and to the incredible people who are making a profound impact on rhino conservation. ? #UnitedForWildlife #RhinoConservation #WomenInConservation #ConservationLeadership #WildlifeSummit #RhinoProtection #NatureProtectors ? ?? With a recent report by @WWF revealing a staggering 73% decline in wildlife populations since 1970, it's clear we urgently need to boost biodiversity. We know healthy ecosystems are essential for a thriving future for people and wildlife. So how can we reverse the trend?? ? This week, countries are meeting in Columbia for a conference on the Convention on Biological Diversity. The conference aims to evaluate actions and progress to increase biodiversity.? ? ?? Appeal Update ?? Last year, you helped raise more than £38,000 to support reforestation efforts in Way Kambas National Park, Sumatra. This funding helped support the future of some of the Sumatran rhinos' precious forest habitat, restoring the forests of Way Kambas. The Park is home to incredible species such as Malayan tapirs, Sumatran elephants and Sumatran tigers and is an important place for Sumatran rhinos, too. Check out this incredible video that shows a before and after of the reforestation efforts from 2020, to 2024 ?????? Rare Javan rhino spotted on camera ?? A new Javan rhino calf has been spotted in Ujung Kulon National Park, Indonesia (UKNP). Thanks to diligent monitoring of camera traps, at least four new Javan rhino calves have been recorded since August 2023! This exciting news provides a much-needed boost for this Critically Endangered species. First seen in May 2024, Iris (as she was named by the Government of Indonesia), is estimated to be between three and five months old and thought to be the first calf for her mother, Putri. Iris’ birth, and the births of the other Javan rhinos, are incredibly significant. Each new addition brings a little more hope for the future of the species, showing that with the right protection, support and habitat, this population can grow. ?? We bring GOOD news from Borana Conservancy ???? In recent years, Parc Zoologique de Paris have generously supported Borana Conservancy and their education programme Mazingira Yetu. This exciting programme helps to deepen understanding of the importance of a healthy ecosystem for people, plants, and animals alike. Funding from Parc Zoologique de Paris supports activities such as the ‘Mazingira Express’ a safari bus, that takes students out on guided safaris on the Conservancy where they are taught about a variety of topics, from the importance of soil health to food chains. This summer, the Mazingira Yetu programme secured another round of funding from Parc Zoologique de Paris to help keep this activity ongoing within the local community.
