We foster thriving/sustainable ecosystems in Monterey Bay & surrounding habitats through equitable environmental action.

关于我们

Save Our Shores is the oldest marine conservation nonprofit along the Central Coast of California. We care for one of the world’s most unique marine ecosystems through ocean awareness, advocacy, and community action. From preventing offshore oil drilling in the Monterey Bay during the 1970s, to helping establish the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in the early 1990s, Save Our Shores brings people together to build community programs and policies that protect the Central Coast marine environment for both current and future generations. #SaveOurShores

On Tuesday, October 8th at the Santa Cruz County Government Center's 5th floor Board Chambers, the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors will hear a report as part of Agenda Item #11, take public testimony, then vote, on an ordinance proposed by County Supervisors Justin Cummings and Manu Koenig to ban the retail sale of filtered tobacco products. A recent Op Ed in the Santa Cruz Sentinel (https://lnkd.in/gzaAxJqt) describes the need for the board to take this action, which is backed by years of research into the impact that tobacco filters have on public health and the environment. Please come and make your voice heard: 1) Attend the Board of Supervisors meeting on October 8th (the meeting starts at 9AM and the item will likely be brought up at 10 AM) to speak in favor of the ordinance. You can also attend virtually. 2) Write letters of support to supervisors at [email protected] and to the Tobacco Waste Coalition at [email protected] by October 7th. 3) Encourage others to write letters in support of the ordinance, to turn out to the meeting or to call in and voice their concerns. Thank you for making a difference! Save Our Shores O'Neill Sea Odyssey

"Cigarette butts are made of cellulose acetate, a non-biodegradable plastic that breaks into microplastics and bioaccumulates in marine organisms. They leach chemicals such as lead, arsenic and nicotine into the environment. These chemicals impact the health of the ocean, and its inhabitants along with vulnerable populations, including youth. Cigarette butts impact public health, our ocean’s health and are a fire hazard, responsible for burning 88,898 acres in California since 1980. Local jurisdictions and conservation nonprofits have taken on the cleanup work and associated costs to protect Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The proactive step of banning filtered tobacco products would help alleviate that problem, and the proposed ban on filtered tobacco products in Santa Cruz County is a step in the right direction." Plastic-free July may be wrapping up, but we know the much-needed work continues. Save Our Shores has been working hard to address cigarette butt litter - an issue that sits at the intersection between environmental and communal health. Did you know they are single-use plastic, toxic, and often the top-littered item locally/globally? SOS has collected ~500K of them, in just ONE decade. We have partnered up to take meaningful action around this top-littered item in Santa Cruz County and we aren't stopping there. Small wins compile to big wins! If you live in the area and want to sign onto our letter to ban the sale of single-use filters, you can join us. Learn more here, scroll down, and sign on! https://lnkd.in/g3tKBmEd

As we celebrate World Oceans Day this year, it would be easy to focus on all the things that are going wrong and what needs to be fixed. The list is long and we continue to push for progress. But we also know that connecting to ourselves and to our environment is where the inspiration lies. Today, we take a moment to celebrate the ocean and how it connects us to one another. Happy World Oceans Day from Save Our Shores! #environmentalhealth #communityhealth #saveourshores #monterybay
