Save Ellis Island (SEI) is a registered 501©3 organization and partner of the National Park Service for the rehabilitation of the 29 mostly unrestored buildings comprising the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital Complex on the South Side of Ellis Island. Founded in 1999, SEI is tasked with raising funds to preserve and rehabilitate the abandoned buildings where 1.2 million immigrants passed through. Ninety-minute educational Hard Hat Tours of the abandoned building are given by Save Ellis Island daily.

A Top New York City Attraction Since its launch in 2014, the Hard Hat Tour has become one of New York City’s top tourist attractions. Guests will journey through the hospital complex, once dedicated to treating newly arrived immigrants, and tour the contagious disease wards, laundry, kitchen, staff housing, morgue and autopsy theater. Throughout the tour, visitors will experience the larger-than-life exhibit Unframed: Ellis Island by renowned French artist JR. This immersive installation features archival imagery of immigrants who traveled through Ellis island, displayed on the very walls of the hospital.   • SPECIAL EVENT When: February 24, 2025 At 7:00p.m. (ET) Where: Virtual Cost: Free; Donation Optional Pulitzer Prize-winning duo of composer Paul Moravec and librettist Mark Campbell will be sharing insights about the creation of their beautiful oratorio, A Nation of Others. Praised by Broadway World as “stunning” during its premiere at Carnegie Hall, A Nation of Others takes place on a single day in 1921 at the Ellis Island Immigration Station. The oratorio follows a group of immigrants arriving by ship as they gain entry into the United States. The narrative weaves together deeply moving and sometimes funny personal stories of immigrants from eight different countries. Mr. Moravec and Mr. Campbell will be in conversation with Sarah Meyers, the Artistic Director of On Site Opera, to discuss their process for creating this work. They will explore how music enriches and deepens the stories and emphasize the importance of honoring the history of Ellis Island. Soprano Susanna Phillips will also join them.   • Friday, December 6, 2024 – Save Ellis Island hosted a special group of visitors on the south side of Ellis Island. William “Bill” Hale Baker used to live on the south side of Ellis Island from 1949 to 1951 when his father, Dr. James Baker, served as the director of neuropsychiatric service at the hospital. Bill was invited by Save Ellis Island to return to the island for a guided tour and visit to the staff house, which was once his home for a brief period of his childhood.

But on October 1, 2014, Save Ellis Island reopened the historic hospital complex to the public with the launch of our Hard Hat Tours.
