Gone are the days where a company can settle for a solution and approach that has been ‘good enough’ to date. We are increasingly living in a complex world, where disruption, technology and consumer demands all create new challenges. Challenges are also shaking up the logistics sector, where supply chain constraints are increasingly causing massive upheaval at a rate never before seen – and where traditional computing can’t keep up. ? NEC Australia partner, D-Wave, identified the following four key challenges for which quantum computing has the potential to drive improvements for the future of logistics globally: ? 1.??????Changing customer preferences 2.??????Inventory management and demand forecasting 3.??????Delivery efficiency and sustainable practices 4.??????Integration of technology ? That’s why I love the following example. ? In 2021, the Port of Los Angeles hosted more than 10 million twenty-foot container units transferred from ships and into trucks that convey them to their inland destinations. Quantum computing was used in this case by tech company SavantX, who built its HONE optimisation engine based on D-Wave's quantum computing system. Optimised operations here meant that each huge crane at Pier 300 handled 60% more cargo per day, while the turnaround time for trucks was reduced by 12%. Optimising logistics in an environment where time is literally money, can make an incredible difference. ? In LA, sound investment in quantum computing technology translated into savings of tens of millions of dollars a year.
