For this primary bedroom, the client came to us with inspiration images of her dream window treatments, and we collaborated to make them a reality. Bright, clean waterfall-style Roman shades, embellished with pops of navy from the Samuel & Sons Greek Key trim, perfectly complement the room's furnishings. Room-darkening lining provides additional light control for those "I hope I get to sleep in" days. We always want our drapery hardware to look good, but it needs to function well too. In this guest cottage, the large draperies were difficult to open and close on their original wood rod and rings due to the weight of the fabric. To improve guest experience, we replaced the rod and ring hardware with a cord drawn track system, allowing the draperies to open and close with ease. We covered the track with a decorative fascia to elevate the look, while the operating cord (tensioned for child safety) is discreetly hidden behind the drapery. Improvements like these make a big difference in creating a seamless guest experience. Given my passion for historical architecture, it was a delight to provide support at the Owens-Thomas House and Slave Quarters. Built in 1819, this English Regency-style mansion is a cultural gem of Savannah, preserved as a reflection of 19th-century life in the Lowcountry. This restoration focused on the Girls’ Bed Chamber, an upper-level space for the original occupants’ three daughters. Following strict guidelines required in historically relevant properties, Savannah Window Fashions helped bring new life to the space by creating historically accurate upholstery and bedding in blue and white toile, a popular fabric of the period. We also worked with Thistle Hill Weavers, a firm that specializes in producing reproduction fabrics on historic looms, for the creation of dimity fabric used for the window dressings and bed curtains. This lightweight yet durable, sheer cotton fabric, is woven in a manner that creates fine, raised stripes or checks. Along with finishes of lavender-gray walls, faux-grained baseboards and window panels, and white trim (replicated through sophisticated paint analysis), the space is now an updated, accurate reflection of times gone by. Creating custom window dressings and soft goods for historic homes requires an elite level of skills. Behind the design... When it comes to custom draperies, there are so many considerations that can elevate a design’s aesthetic and functionality. That’s where we do the behind-the-scenes “heavy lifting" so our clients have the elevated product they envisioned. This newly built Bluffton home is a perfect example. The double-layer treatment features functional sheers over triple pinch pleat stationary side panels, which create fullness and ensure uniform folds. The panels also have hand-sewn banding on the sides and bottom hems. The panels incorporate an interlining in addition to a lining. Why is that important? This extra layer of fabric sandwiched between the lining and the front-facing fabric creates panels with a fuller and more opulent look that can also improve insulation.
