Project Spotlight: Dallas County Government Center and Sheriff’s Academy
The Dallas County Government Center is a 73,000 square-foot, two-story facility that merges departments under one roof: Dallas County’s Tax Office, Veterans' Affairs, County Constables, Sheriff’s Traffic Division, Dispatch, K9-Unit and two Justice of the Peace Courts. The Government Center also includes an ICC-500 Storm Shelter that can withstand winds up to 200 miles per hour in the Sheriff Dispatch area. The dispatch area serves as a backup for other municipalities in the area.
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Dallas County implemented major scope changes including the addition of air-scrubbers, touchless entries and touchless drinking fountains.
Located just South of the Government Center Facility, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Academy is a 27,000 square-foot facility that serves as the main training grounds for both sworn peace officers and cadets in the County’s academy. The old facility was a windowless, pre-engineered metal building in an isolated area. The new facility serves as an active outreach tool for engagement, retention and recruitment.
The facility includes three 50-seat terraced lecture halls with instructor observation rooms and one large 100-seat multi-purpose classroom that can be subdivided into two rooms with fifty seats in each. The classrooms are equipped with digital technology that enables multi-sensory instruction.
The Sheriff’s Academy also includes an on-site computer lab, locker rooms and a gymnasium, which is equipped with free weights, cardiovascular machines, an open area for tactile training and a public walking trail.
