The social worker provides support, counseling, and advocacy for patients and their families who are coping with terminal illnesses, chronic diseases, and end-of-life issues. This role involves assessments and coordination of resources. On Tuesday, November 6, SBL partnered with local organizations to host Land of Lincoln Flightless Honor Flights for local veterans who served in World War 2, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The events in Mattoon and Effingham were specifically designed for veterans who anticipate that they may not be physically able to withstand the rigors of an actual Honor Flight to Washington DC. Veterans were treated to a video tour of war memorials in Washington DC and were given mail bags with thank you letters from other community members. Community members also thanked the veterans for their service in person. One veteran who enjoyed the experience is former SBL employee Perry Reed. Perry served in the US Army during the Vietnam era as a Private First Class E-3. After retiring, Perry started at SBL in environmental services, before working in security and as a greeter and valet. His last job with SBL was as a courier for the Pharmacy. Perry's daughter, Misty Bishop, RN, said it was an honor for him to be honored by SBL and the community during the event. “It meant a lot to him to be able to be honored for his service in the Army,” Misty said. “He was very emotional during the Honor Flight video and also the recognition afterwards. I haven’t seen my dad smile that much in a long time.” She added that Perry recognized some SBL employees who wrote to him and was touched that they remembered him and thanked him. “When I visited him the next day he kept telling me how nice it was for him to be there. No one will ever truly know what it meant to him (and his family) to be honored and recognized for his sacrifice and service to his country,” Misty said. “This is a memory I will always cherish
