I often talk about the emotional rollercoaster of #caring for your parents. Still, the financial rollercoaster is just as disheartening ending with the #caregiver not having enough funds to care for themselves in their #seniorliving years The #Caregiving crisis is not a day in the future, it's #RightNow. We need more resources, more aid, more support on EVERY level! From USA TODAY "The cost of #caregiving isn’t just ravaging the finances of older Americans but also those of younger generations who provide the care, according to a study by the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health sponsored by pharmaceutical company Otsuka Pharmaceutical Companies (U.S.). Due to reallocating funds to caregiving expenses and foregoing essential retirement contributions, #caregivers who begin their duties at a younger age risk an average 40% to 90% deficit in #retirement savings, depending on salary, by age 65 compared to non-caregivers, the study said. That’s equivalent to another seven to 21 years of work to recover the savings loss." To those, the Caregiving crisis is not a day in the future, it's #RightNow. (Guaranteed!) Whether they are caring for an elderly parent, a sick spouse, or a #newborn, a kind word or gesture of #support could make a huge difference in their mental and physical well-being. In this week's #MinuteofSolace, we give you some ideas on what you can do to help the #caregivers in your life. ➡️ One suggestion is to offer specific ways to help. Instead of asking, "What can I do?" say, "I'm bringing dinner over at 5:30". "I'll pick up the kids from school", "I'll pick up the prescriptions from the pharmacy." Being specific makes them less likely to reject the support they so desperately need. Sharing a recent interview with our CEO, Merle Griff from Care.com "'We’ve always had positive outcomes with our programs,' Dr. Merle Griff notes. 'The older adults are often so patient and approving with the kids, delighting in their artwork and projects. And more so, they’re getting a sense of purpose and renewal.' And on the other end, she notes, 'kids who once had biases about “senior citizens” with walkers and wheelchairs completely dissipate after spending time with them. They’re no longer uncomfortable or awkward around older adults.'” I was recently featured in Care.com and shared how important hashtag #intergenerational programs are.
