  • On any platform, if there’s a “trend” and to you it seems: Fun Diverting Valuable Interesting Worthwhile Enticing Aligned …Go for it. And if the only reason to participate is because “everyone else is doing it.” Great news: You’re not in middle school anymore. No one’s gonna tease you because you’re the only girl not wearing Limited Too underwear when everyone changes for gym class. To mix our metaphors (because it’s fun and if you’ve been on zoom with me it’s daily), let that pitch go by.

  • When’s the last time you experimented in your content and what might that look like for you? I’m not just talking about adding in short-form video (though I know someone who can help ??) I mean when’s the last time you told a personal story? When’s the last time you disagreed with something? Always write long posts: Try one sentence. More of a Hemingway? Write a long status. Always include a photo? Skip it. Never? Vice versa. Quote others? Start with your own. Always start with original thought - share something you recently read (and attribute if you’d like to stay besties!) You’re not abandoning your style - you’re experimenting. For you, for your audience, for the algo. Worst case scenario it’s a fun thought exercise. Will you give it a shot this week?

  • “Post consistently.” They say. “Post more.” They say. That’s THE secret to social media, so they say. But nobody every asked for more forgettable content, and if you don’t take the time to improve it; you’re going to waste a lot of time, energy, and effort on content that doesn’t do anything for you or your audience.

  • Don't be intimated by stats around retention on videos and scared that you must be immediately brilliant. If you're on LinkedIn, you might be more comfortable writing. Are you intimated by the idea that a post or an article needs a lead to get people to keep reading? No? Sweet. A video hook is simply a lead by another name. Prepare the same way. You can do this.

  • File this under "social media best practices" that I will never understand or subscribe to: Taking SOMEONE ELSE's quote--their hard-earned thought leadership--and putting it in YOUR branding and adorning it with YOUR website for YOUR own edification and vanity metrics. If they inspired you, go ahead and share the quote. I love that for you. My issue is the co-brand without co-sign. The leveraging of someone you supposedly admire. The blatant coat-tail riding. Share the inspiration. Talk about it. Dissect it. Make it your own. And stop putting their name, face, and quote above YOUR website. It's icky. You have more to offer than coopting someone else's brand.
