Freedom School comes to an end this week, but the fact remains that Black teachers continue to be a critical need in public schools around the country. Research shows that Black children perform better when taught by same-race teachers in elementary school, leading to fewer dropout rates in high school and an increase in college enrollment. The results proved the strongest for Black boys. The Center for Black Educator Development is changing the way youth see careers in teaching and provides training and support to existing Black educators. The Center was founded by Sharif El-Mekki in 2019. This article shares how El-Mekki and his team are increasing the number of Black teachers in Philly and beyond, but also why it is important.
