?? Exciting news! We recently released our Transportation Applications Report as the third chapter in our?Hydrogen Innovation Report series! Hydrogen is making serious inroads across transportation, but where is the real momentum??SEP’s Transportation Applications Report?breaks down the numbers, tracking?352 hydrogen transport announcements since January 2023, including?66,000+ vehicle orders globally. This report goes beyond the headlines, analyzing?six key markets—trucks, buses, rail, cargo ships, aircraft, and material handling—to uncover?who’s buying, where policies are driving adoption, and which companies are shaping the future. With deep dives into?market trends, hydrogen demand for SAF, and cost, weight and driving range comparisons across H2, diesel, and EVs,?this?453-page report?(formatted as slides) serves as the ultimate guide for investors, operators, and policymakers, complete with all citations (hundreds of sources). ?? Hydrogen Green Metrics Highlights Series—Week Three Hydrogen is an indirect greenhouse gas with a GWP100 of 12. Atmospheric concentration is relatively low and annual hydrogen production-related leaks are a small fraction of total hydrogen sources. Growth in clean hydrogen production as part of the energy transition to decarbonize many hard-to-abate industries necessitates low leak rates. In today’s third installment of highlights from the SEP report, we examine the sources of hydrogen released into the atmosphere. The majority of hydrogen emissions come from non-anthropogenic sources, while most anthropogenic emissions are not linked to leaks from hydrogen production. Annual global hydrogen emissions are estimated at 74 million metric tonnes (MMT). This includes photochemical sources, where hydrogen is generated through atmospheric reactions in the presence of sunlight, as well as direct anthropogenic sources such as fossil fuel combustion. Leaks from hydrogen production are not included in this estimate. However, researchers estimate that global hydrogen production—approximately 90 MMT per year—adds an additional 2–3 MMT of hydrogen emissions. The SEP report Hydrogen Green Metrics investigates this and other environmental features of hydrogen production, transportation, and use. Hydrogen Green Metrics Highlights Series—Week Two Hydrogen is an indirect greenhouse gas with a GWP100 of 12. Atmospheric concentration is relatively low and annual hydrogen production-related leaks are a small fraction of total hydrogen sources. Growth in clean hydrogen production as part of the energy transition to decarbonize many hard-to-abate industries necessitates low leak rates. In today’s second installment of highlights from the SEP report, we explore the sinks for hydrogen released into the atmosphere. The primary sink for atmospheric hydrogen is soil, which accounts for approximately 70% of hydrogen removal, with the remainder occurring in the atmosphere. While more research is needed to fully understand this process, it is known that factors such as soil temperature, moisture, type, carbon content, and the surrounding ecosystem influence hydrogen uptake. Both methane and hydrogen react with hydroxyl radicals (OH) in the atmosphere. Increased hydrogen emissions or leaks can deplete OH levels, leading to a longer atmospheric lifetime for methane. The team at SEP just cranked out maps of planned hydrogen supply and demand projects in the US by Congressional district. Like you, we wonder if the projects are likely to receive bipartisan support, evidenced by seeing the 45V or 45Q tax credits kept in place or funding support for the H2 Hubs. Looks like our hunch was right, check out our maps for the Gulf Coast below. Feel free to share this out to your networks. For information about accessing our hydrogen market data systems and Hydrogen Data Consortium, ping me by leaving a note in the comments. #hydrogen #cleanhydrogen #cleanenergy #cleantech #hydrogenhubs #45V #Inflationreductionact

Hydrogen Green Metrics Highlights Series—Week One Hydrogen is an indirect greenhouse gas with a GWP100 of 12. Atmospheric concentration is relatively low and annual hydrogen production-related leaks are a small fraction of total hydrogen sources. Growth in clean hydrogen production as part of the energy transition to decarbonize many hard-to-abate industries necessitates low leak rates. The SEP report Hydrogen Green Metrics investigates this and other environmental features of hydrogen production, transportation, and use. This is SEP’s first post in a weekly series highlighting key insights from our report. Today, we refine our understanding of hydrogen, greenhouse gases (GHGs), and their respective roles in atmospheric concentrations. Global hydrogen production accounts for 2–3% of net GHG emissions, primarily due to a gray hydrocarbon-based production pathway such as steam methane reforming (SMR). Clean hydrogen offers the potential to significantly reduce or eliminate this carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) footprint. While hydrogen itself is not a GHG, it interacts with other atmospheric gases in ways that amplify GHG concentrations, making it an indirect GHG regardless of its production method. However, its atmospheric concentration remains relatively low. For more information, the report may be accessed here: bit.ly/3F9zv8o #GreenMetrics #GlobalHydrogen #KeyInsights
