Santa Ynez Tribal Health Clinic recently hosted a special visit for the acting director for Indian Health Service (IHS), Benjamin Smith, and his staff. The visit included a tour of the clinic’s state-of-the-art facility, and a fruitful conversation about how our clinic can enhance the services and programs it offers both the tribal community and the broader community it serves. Through Chumash Enterprises, Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians is proud to offer a Tribal Youth Job Skills Program each summer to Santa Ynez Chumash community members. This eight-week program provides high school-aged Santa Ynez Chumash youth with on-the-job training and work experience to help them develop professional skills, explore career options and set future goals. Special touches and meaningful additions can be found throughout the Santa Ynez Chumash Museum and Cultural Center, providing delightful new discoveries as you explore the 3.5-acre park. One of the most recent additions is a beautiful installation by Native American artist George Rivera, of the Pueblo of Pojoaque tribe from Santa Fe, NM. Known as the "Elders Council Statue," this breathtaking sculpture will welcome visitors to the property when the museum opens later this year. In 1994, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians established an Education Department to administer a financial aid program to support tuition expenses from preschool through college. Today, the Education Department offers academic support, advocacy, counseling, college visits, and financial aid for our tribal descendants, as well as academic intervention and resources offered to tribal students throughout the year. Last month, the talented Dental Department at Santa Ynez Tribal Health Clinic held its annual Give Kids A Smile event, which provided children ages 12 and under with free dental work, cleanings and exams by the Clinic's dentists, registered dental hygienists and assistants. In just one day the team saw a total of 28 children and provided over $7,300 in services. “Our dental clinic looks forward to this event every year, because it gives us an opportunity to shine a light on the importance of pediatric oral health, and to hopefully make a positive and lasting impact on our young patients,” said SYTHC Dental Director Dr. Michael Savidan. Give Kids A Smile is a national program launched in 2003 by the American Dental Association (ADA), with the goal of providing no-cost care for thousands of children at hundreds of locations nationwide. #santayneztribalhealthclinic #sythc #givekidsasmile

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian recently introduced a new digital lesson, “California Native American Survival and Resilience During the Mission Period: A Source Investigation.” The program includes two distinct modules, one for fourth grade students in California and one for seventh-through-12th grade students nationwide; and each module includes a special introductory essay by Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians Cultural Director and Tribal Historic Preservation Officer Nakia Zavalla.
