Every meal starts with water. From growing crops to preparing food, clean water is essential for nutrition. Yet, 1 in 3 people worldwide still lack access to safe drinking water. In agriculture, water scarcity threatens food security. With 72% of global freshwater used for farming, how we manage water today will determine how well we nourish communities tomorrow. In regions where maize flour is a staple, water is not just for irrigation—it is critical for milling, fortification, and ensuring safe, nutritious food reaches families. On #WorldWaterDay, we recognize that access to safe water is essential for both food security and nutrition. From irrigating staple crops like maize and wheat to ensuring safe food preparation, water plays a direct role in public health. Yet, with rising water scarcity, how we manage this resource will determine our ability to nourish communities sustainably. What steps can we take to protect water sources while ensuring nutritious food remains accessible to all? Flour is more than just a staple—it’s the foundation of daily meals across cultures, from?ugali?in Eastern Africa to?tortillas?in Latin America and?cornbread?in the U.S. But beyond providing energy, flour holds the potential to?heal and nourish. They say?food is medicine, and this couldn’t be more true when it comes to flour fortification. Millions of people suffer from?hidden hunger—a lack of essential micronutrients that leads to?stunting in children, anemia in women, and weakened immune systems. By adding?iron, folic acid, and other key vitamins?to the flour people already consume, we can?fight malnutrition without changing eating habits. At?Sanku, we work with millers to ensure that fortified flour is?affordable, accessible, and part of the solution to global malnutrition. On this #WorldFlourDay, let’s recognize that flour is more than just a staple—it’s a tool for health, resilience, and a brighter future.?Because every meal should count. https://lnkd.in/dnTzWREt #EndHiddenHunger #NutritionForGrowth #MaternalHealth #FoodFortification

Sanku set for further expansion in Ethiopia! In collaboration with the Regional Government of Dire Dawa, a city in eastern Ethiopia, Sanku brought together key stakeholders to emphasize the critical and urgent need for flour fortification in that area. In Dire Dawa, a city near the border of Somalia, malnutrition, including stunting, wasting, and underweight, is a significant public health concern, with high rates of undernutrition among children. A particularly vulnerable population in Dire Dawa is street children, who are at higher risk of malnutrition due to limited access to proper care and resources. This recent meeting brought together the decisions makers from various Ministries and key departments, including the Mayor’s Office, Health, Trade, Education, Women, Children & Social Affairs, Food & Drug Agency, Mass Media Agency, and other relevant offices to align on strategies and actions that will ensure effective flour fortification in the region. With this passionate group and level of support, Sanku and our partner millers will aim to make fortified flour available to the 500,000 people living in Dire Dawa city, and the millions more living throughout that greater region. #FlourFortification #PublicHealth #Collaboration Sanku #DireDawa #Compliance #StakeholderEngagement #NutritionMatters

Last week, we hosted Norwegian Members of Parliament (MPs) and visited Grainmills General Merchants Ltd, the manufacturers of the Afrika Maize flour brand, in Nairobi, Kenya. They witnessed firsthand how we empower small and medium-scale millers to produce fortified, nutritious flour, making it more accessible to local communities. The visit offered valuable insights into the role of small-scale millers in reaching the majority of consumers. The MPs engaged with millers, observed fortification in action, and even tried carrying bales of fortified flour. We appreciate Eirik Mofoss?for making this visit possible and his commitment to nutrition and fortification, as well as Maria Bakken?for coordinating the trip. It was a great opportunity to highlight the impact of food fortification at every scale. Learn more: www.sanku.com #EndHiddenHunger #NutritionForGrowth #MaternalHealth #FoodFortification

At Sanku, our Business Development Managers (BDMs) are the first point of contact for the millers we work with. They provide hands-on support to ensure flour fortification continues without interruption. Whether it’s troubleshooting Dosifier issues, overseeing logistics for nutrient premix supply, or supporting compliance at the mill level, they make sure millers have what they need to keep producing nutritious flour. Their work is essential to making fortification a practical and sustainable reality, helping Sanku reach more communities with healthier food. With the?Nutrition for Growth Summit?on the horizon, we must keep?women’s and children’s health at the center?of global commitments. Today,?1 billion women and girls?face malnutrition, increasing the risks for mothers and newborns. At Sanku, we are working to change this by ensuring that?essential nutrients?reach the people who need them most. Through?fortified staple foods, we’re making everyday meals more nutritious, supporting healthier pregnancies, and building stronger communities. As leaders gather for #N4G2025, we call for?bold action and sustained investment?to ensure every mother and child has access to the nutrition they deserve. #EndHiddenHunger #NutritionForGrowth #MaternalHealth #FoodFortification https://lnkd.in/dhw6yxaB
The Nutrition for Growth Summit is around the corner, and maternal nutrition must be high on the agenda. One billion women and girls suffer from malnutrition, making pregnancy even riskier for millions of mothers. Multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) -- comprehensive prenatal vitamins -- are one of the most cost-effective ways to address this gap, providing lifesaving support for pregnant women and their babies. #N4GParis #InvestInMMS

This?International Women’s Day, we’re not just celebrating women’s achievements—we’re pushing for faster, bolder action toward?gender equality. This year’s theme,?“Accelerate Action,”?is a powerful reminder: the time to act is now! Better nutrition = Stronger women = Stronger communities. Ahead of #IWD, we’re in?Arusha, joining the?East African Community, Ministry of Health, and youth leaders?to drive conversations on?food fortification & gender empowerment. Why??Because?nutrition is a foundation for women’s health, especially for?pregnant women and infants, helping to prevent life-threatening conditions and ensuring healthier futures. At?Sanku, we’re scaling up?food fortification?in partnership with the government—because when women?thrive, families flourish, and societies grow stronger. In just eight months, our new Nutrient Premix Blending Factory—the first of its kind in Eastern Africa—has produced 60 metric tonnes of premix, enough to fortify ONE BILLION MEALS. This is not just an impressive number and milestone— this means a billion meals and millions of people eating food that is packed with Zinc, Folic Acid, Iron, Vitamin A and other B vitamins, all of which help strengthen immune systems, support child development, and keep mothers healthy. Our factory blends high-quality, affordable nutrient premix right here in Eastern Africa, making it easy for millers to add essential vitamins and minerals affordably to the flour that feeds millions. Every batch is carefully mixed, tested, and tracked to make sure it meets the highest Government and customer standards before reaching a miller. But don’t just take our word for it—see the process for yourself! Take a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to blend nutrient premix locally.
