Food insecurity and malnutrition often create environments where violence thrives, particularly against women and children. Violence against women and girls leads to physical and psychological trauma, which often results in poor nutritional status. Women who experience violence may suffer from stress, depression, and anxiety, which can affect their appetite and ability to maintain a healthy diet. This International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 2024, let’s remember that fighting hunger is also about protecting the most vulnerable. Children are the most vulnerable to the effects of Hidden Hunger. Malnutrition in early childhood can lead to lifelong challenges, from stunted growth to cognitive delays. From the third trimester to the second birthday, a million synapses a second are formed in a well-nourished brain, creating the foundation on which all learning, behaviour and health depend. This #WorldChildrensDay2024, let’s commit to invest in our children's future by prioritizing their rights and well-being. In Eastern Africa, Sanku is working to ensure that all children have access to their fundamental right to healthy food by ensuring that they receive the nutrients they need to grow strong and healthy. Access to proper nutrition is a basic human right, not simply a matter of assistance. At the Conduit Changemakers gathering in London this week, Sanku’s co-founder & CEO, Felix Brooks-church, shared insights on the intersection of gender, climate, and nutrition—areas where Sanku is focused on addressing critical challenges for vulnerable communities. Our food systems are intertwined with the climate crisis, both contributing to it and being affected by it. The solutions are there, but making them a reality requires increased investment to drive these efforts forward and unlock their full impact. Felix was joined by leaders in the field: Gemma Tumelty of Eleanor Crook Foundation, Atalanti Moquette, founder of Giving Women, and Hamzah Sarwar from Reckitt.
