Building a healthier ecosystem for generations to come.
关于我们
At Sankofa Community Development Corporation, we believe health to be the cornerstone of a thriving community. When individuals are healthy, relationships function better, families operate more easily and communities are more cohesive. This creates opportunities for increased safety, stability and overall viability. In holding with foundational principles of community development, we believe that the power for true transformation lies within the community. We therefore, work with residents and other stakeholders to identify locally-felt social challenges and address them in thoughtful, culturally-competent ways. We understand the power of the built environment in shaping health and therefore partner with other traditional community development organizations and non-profits to address the “social determinants of health” that trigger inequities. For us, the ultimate goal is to support the creation of a local environment that promotes positive health outcomes and builds healthier communities for generations to come.

The Kresge Foundation is a partner and invaluable advocate for the Lower Ninth Ward. We are grateful and committed to continuing the years-long work Kresge generously supports. "It's not just important to get the funding, Sankofa CDC's CEO, Rashida Ferdinand shares, "but it also is just as important to have that intellectual thought relationship with a group that can help us apply our ideas and visions into something that is sustainable." Here’s to another 100 years of community-building success!
Our history began on June 11, 1924, when Sebastian S. Kresge, a business magnate, decided to turn much of his wealth over to establish a private foundation, to serve as a catalyst for future generations. He gave only one mandate: to promote human progress. A century later, The Kresge Foundation has turned Sebastian's gift into grants totaling more than $5 billion (including $1 billion to our hometown of Detroit). This short film chronicles the story of how the foundation began and how it evolved from being a capital challenge grantmaker for 80 years to being focused on cities and equity today. https://bit.ly/4aWWrSz
