?? Congrats to our DPP Cohort 2 Graduates! ?? We’re incredibly proud of the graduates of the Diabetes Prevention Program in collaboration with?HarrisCounty PublicHealth. Over the past year, they’ve not only learned how to manage their health and reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes but have also built a strong, supportive community. ?? Each participant came up with their own healthy recipes, discovering creative ways to incorporate better eating into their daily lives. They’ve worked hard to develop lasting habits, and now they’re motivated to continue applying everything they’ve learned outside the program. In honor of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, we’re proud to highlight Ms. Lucrecia Montez, our dedicated Social Worker at San Jose Clinic, who has been working in the field for over 20 years. Lucrecia’s passion for helping children and families led her to focus on the most vulnerable populations, those affected by severe physical and sexual abuse. Early in her career, she began receiving more and more human trafficking cases, which sparked her drive to do more for survivors. As Lucrecia shared with us, “I hope people take away that human trafficking is real, and it’s something we can’t just brush under the carpet. We need to stop pretending it’s not happening and start taking real action. The rates are high, and they’re only increasing. If we’re truly going to help these women, men, and children, we need to create systems where they don’t have to return to the life they escaped from.” One of Lucrecia’s biggest concerns is the lack of specialized shelters for trafficking survivors. While there are domestic violence shelters and substance abuse recovery homes, there are few resources specifically for trafficking victims, especially in cities like Houston, a known trafficking hub. Lucrecia is a tireless advocate for her clients, ensuring they have access to every resource possible to rebuild their lives. She leaves no stone unturned and works relentlessly to make a difference.
