Recognizing and upholding human rights to water and sanitation, even during wars and natural disasters, is essential for transforming water from a source of instability into a pillar of peace. In early March, SWA’s Head of Policy, Accountability and Results Anjani Kapoor spoke at the International Symposium on Water and Disaster for Cooperation and Partnerships in Tokyo, Japan. The symposium focused on cooperation among nations as well as principles of peace that address pre-disaster, disaster, and post-disaster scenarios. The group also discussed implementation strategies for “The Spirit of Bandung: A Call to Action”—a pivotal outcome document from the Bandung Spirit Water Summit at the 10th World Water Forum and its potential alignment with the 2026 United Nations Water Conference.

Glaciers are essential freshwater sources for billions of people. They're also melting faster than ever. As the planet gets hotter due to climate change, our frozen world is shrinking, making the water cycle more unpredictable and extreme. In turn, communities face increasing water scarcity and a lack of access to safe, sufficient, and reliable water - which is a fundamental human right. The right to sanitation is equally at risk. Changing water flows from glacial melt contribute to floods, droughts, and landslides, damaging sanitation infrastructure and contaminating water supplies. Without sustainable management, waterborne diseases spread more rapidly, exacerbating public health crises and disproportionately affecting marginalized communities. Again, it is the most vulnerable who will bear the greatest burden, deepening global inequalities. This week, SWA is participating in meetings with the United Nations Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG) to review updated National Adaptation Plan Technical Guidelines. Read more from SWA's Senior Climate Advisor JOSE GESTI on why this is so important right now. Curious about LEG's work? You can read more here: https://unfccc.int/LEG https://lnkd.in/gkqmDS-u
???? Excited to be participating in the Expert Meeting to Review the Updated NAP Technical Guidelines hosted by @UNFCCC, alongside global experts and practitioners working to enhance climate adaptation planning! As countries revise their National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), it is critical to ensure that water, sanitation, and transboundary water management are fully integrated. Water security is at the heart of climate resilience, and without strong water adaptation measures, millions remain at risk from droughts, floods, and failing infrastructure. This meeting is an essential step toward aligning the updated NAP guidelines with the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA), the Paris Agreement, and the latest science from the IPCC. Discussions are covering key issues such as: ?? Strengthening financing and implementation strategies for climate adaptation ?? Ensuring water and sanitation resilience is prioritized in national adaptation planning ?? Linking NAPs with Paris Agreement reporting and long-term adaptation goals ?? Exploring cross-sectoral integration, innovation, and equity The revision of NDCs and formulation of NAPs in 2025 is a crucial window for scaling up adaptation efforts to meet the 1.5oC climate goal. We must seize this opportunity to ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to access to climate-resilient water and sanitation services. Looking forward to engaging with @GGA, @LEG, @UN for NAPs, and all colleagues working on this! #SWA #ClimateAdaptation #WaterSecurity #Sanitation #NAPs #GGA #ClimateResilience #ParisAgreement

At SWA we've always known that "accountability" isn't just a buzzword. It’s the backbone of progress and, with the proper mechanism in place, it can turn lofty promises into meaningful action. Our Mutual Accountability Mechanism (MAM) has been a game-changer since 2018. With 498 commitments tabled by stakeholders from 61 countries, and 46% out of 295 progress reports fully or nearly fully achieved, numbers show that we're closer to realizing the human right to water and sanitation.

In 2024, water disasters claimed at least 8,700 lives, displaced 40 million people, and caused over $550 billion in economic losses. Experts predict 2025 may only get worse. ? When it comes to climate policy, global leaders often advance one priority at the expense of others. But development goals are intertwined, and climate policy without water is incomplete policy. ? Our 1st?issue of the "Standpoints on WASH" Newsletter focuses on the importance of prioritizing water and sanitation in climate action. You can also sign up for the webinar discussion coming in February.???
