Dr. Dave Newman, chief medical officer of virtual care, recently sat down with Katie Adams at MedCity News to share how our commitment to delivering high-quality care to rural communities drives us to embrace innovative solutions. "We decided several years ago that in order to provide the highest quality care to our rural population, we had to think differently. It was really innovation out of necessity," Newman remarked. He highlighted that scaling virtual care has helped Sanford in its efforts to tackle the mental health crisis in rural America. "People with mental health needs are often already struggling with day-to-day routines, and the logistics of getting an appointment were too hard. So we started direct-to-consumer behavioral health appointments, where it's just like going online to order something from your favorite marketplace or getting a reservation at a restaurant. Within a couple clicks, you can be seen by a mental health care provider," he added. Nathan Skelley, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Sanford Health, has developed an innovative hip surgery technique that significantly reduces recovery time for patients. This new method, highlighted in an award-winning educational video, minimizes patient discomfort by using less invasive procedures. Sanford Health has played a vital role in establishing a new approach to hip procedures, but the benefits of that research will extend far beyond the region. "It's a very powerful medium we can use to exchange ideas and collaborate and learn to deliver the highest care possible," Dr. Skelley said. "At the Sanford USD Medical Center, we're doing that every day, and not just in the space of sports medicine, but across all subspecialties of orthopedics. My colleagues and I are engaged in this orthopedic space online and in national meetings to advance the care we deliver in our region." Learn more: https://san.fo/41GFH0x

"One of the reasons why I enjoy being an orthopedic surgeon is that we're taking care of dysfunctions – we get people back to speed, back to their function, especially with athletes. The patients are happy. You see them with a smile on their face and they're back in the spotlight." Addison Klosterbuer, a University of South Dakota basketball player, experienced a significant setback during her first season after rolling her ankle during practice. After that sore ankle became a lot more swollen, it led Klosterbuer to a visit at Sanford Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Sioux Falls with orthopedic surgeon Alan Yan, MD, who specializes in treating foot and ankle conditions.
