America's Safe Schools Week is coming up! Next week (October 20-26) is dedicated to raising awareness about school safety and taking steps to prevent violence in schools across the nation, with National SAVE Day on Wednesday, October 23! This week, we were honored to have Nicole Hockley and Sandy Hook Promise representatives present to our TCS faculty and staff on preventing school violence. Tuscaloosa City Schools is thrilled to be implementing Sandy Hook Promise's comprehensive, evidence-based, school violence prevention program in each one of our 21 schools. Lt. Craig Parker and I shared how TCS is aligning our threat assessment and threat management practices with the Central Alabama Threat Team's practices to interrupt potential threats in our schools before they even begin. I'm immensely proud to be a part of this vital work in our district and the greater community.

Today, on #WorldMentalHealthDay, we shine a light on the importance of mental health and suicide prevention. Did you know that two-thirds of all gun deaths are suicides, making it the second leading cause of death among young people? We believe that suicide is preventable when we recognize the warning signs and know how to get help.
