What an amazing opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology like the SPEE3D WarpSpeed printer in Missouri S&T’s new Manufacturing Emphasis program! Kudos to Dr. Jacob Miller and the team for empowering future engineers to tackle challenges in additive manufacturing with creativity and innovation. ??
Had the fortune of teaching the students of the new MAE Additive Manufacturing course about the joys of cold spray AM. Not only the basic theory of cold spray, but hands on experience with the SPEE3D WarpSpeed printer, from modeling a part, to trial and error slicing and path planning, to a final print. The exciting part is that this new course lead by Jacob Miller, PhD is part of a newly revised Manufacturing Emphasis program that MAE is offering, made possible by the recent MO Excels grant. CSAM is just one of many emerging techniques they learned about. Each group came up with a design and iterated through multiple renditions to appreciate the intricacies of MfCSAM / DfCSAM. The first group decided to go with an ice cream scooper (bc Cold Spray, get it?) and learned interesting constraints with overhangs at the top presenting a challenge to build without support. They have access to a kiln and will be processing the heat treatment on their own before machining to a usable state! Lastly we looked at process data to ensure pressure, temperature, and mass flow rate all stayed within acceptable quality limits throughout the build.
