?? MSHA has issued a final rule on respirable crystalline silica exposure, setting the permissible exposure limit at 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air for a full-shift exposure. This rule mandates immediate corrective actions by mine operators if exposure exceeds the limit. However, the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) is disappointed that it doesn't align with recent OSHA standards. ?? The rule requires mine operators to use engineering controls to prevent overexposure, conduct dust samplings, and provide environmental evaluations. The Department of Labor emphasizes the importance of protecting miners' health, with the Biden-Harris administration prioritizing safety. ?? MSHA's final rule mandates medical surveillance programs for metal and nonmetal mine operators, similar to those for coal miners. This action is hailed as a long-awaited protection for miners against silica-related diseases, with estimated avoided deaths and illnesses. ?? Respirable crystalline silica poses severe health risks, including lung diseases and cancer.
