Every dollar you offer the studio when you walk in the doors contributes to keeping us open, but we are supported in a special way by our Outer Circle members. For $99/month (a little less than the market rate for unlimited yoga in any other studio in the?#quadcities) our Outer Circle members provide consistent financial support, making it possible for every BODY to practice with us, regardless of their ability to pay. This isn’t charity. It’s?#communitycare Outer Circle members also make it possible for us to pay our teachers $40/class, almost 2x the flat rate for classes in our local community. This way our teachers get paid a living wage no matters how many people show up to practice and it allows them the opportunity to do what they do best: just teach. We’ve added FIVE new members to the Outer Circle this week alone, bringing us to 45% of our goal, and once we reach our fully funded target, we will bring alll new offerings to our local community. People have lots to say about our pay-what-you-can model, but the thing we hear most often is how GENEROUS we are to create a studio that doesn’t keep people out if they can’t pay. And while we appreciate the kindness, what we really want to say in response is this: It isn’t generosity. It’s justice. Being able to move your body in meaningful ways with other people is something that every BODY ought to have access to. And we’re happy to be able to make Sanctuary into a home where that happens all week long. #paywhatyoucan #communitycare

Last week we had a conversation with someone who hadn’t been in studio for a little while and she confessed that money had been tight and she felt bad about coming without being able to pay. But this is literally why we’re here: To make movement and meditation accessible during every season of life, including the seasons where there isn’t enough money to go around. And when we say pay-what-you-can we mean it, even if what you can pay is ZERO dollars. We know that when you can, you will; and until then, we have plenty of room for you. Can we talk about the money for a minute? As the only pay-what-you-can studio for movement and meditation in the local community, we've got some things to say about the way you pay at Sanctuary Studios. Every class is pay-what-you-can, but that doesn't mean money doesn't matter. It does. It has to. We've got bills to pay and talented teachers who deserve a living wage in exchange for their time and expertise. But at Sanctuary, we believe there is something in between greed and charity. We believe there is a third way of being in relationship with each other. That third way is through community care. Where greed says: Take all you can. And charity says: Give all you can. Community care says: Show up with what you have. I'll do the same. Together, there will be enough. And we know we're just one small studio in one small community, but imagine what might become possible if we actually learned to LIVE this way? At Sanctuary , we intend to find out.
