On Monday, March 24th, 2025, Yemen’s Houthi military and U.S. Naval forces engaged in a prolonged exchange of missile fire over Yemen and the Red Sea. Houthi sources report two fatalities and fifteen injuries. U.S. Navy officials, in private discussions, acknowledge that aerial strikes alone are insufficient to neutralize the threat, suggesting the potential necessity of ground operations. Sanborn Analytics advises all vessels transiting the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and surrounding waters to exercise extreme caution. Heightened security measures and route adjustments are recommended to mitigate risk. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops. This is a continuing maritime security or marsec update from Sanborn Analytics. On March 21st, 2025, authorities at the Port of Vigo, Spain, swiftly responded to mitigate a navigational hazard and guided the containership MSC Houston V (58,300 dwt) into port following a stack collapse. The vessel was directed to dock to prevent further damage and additional container losses. The incident occurred off the southwest coast of Portugal near Cape St. Vincent, where the vessel encountered a severe late-winter storm with winds nearing 50 knots. The aftmost container stack collapsed to starboard, tearing open several containers, some of which were left hanging over the vessel’s side. The damaged condition of the ship drew attention upon its arrival in Vigo on March 21. A subsequent assessment in Vigo determined that 15 to 20 containers were lost overboard. Port officials reported that none of the affected containers carried hazardous cargo. However, Portuguese authorities have issued a navigational warning regarding potential debris in the water. This is a continuing maritime security or marsec update from Sanborn Analytics. On March 23rd, 2025, Taiwan's Coast Guard reported the detention of a Chinese vessel classified as a "three-no" barge—lacking a name, homeport, and registration upon inspection. This incident is part of an ongoing pattern amid heightened tensions, with Taiwan reaffirming its commitment to increasing surveillance of Chinese vessels entering restricted areas. The alert was issued early on March 23, after an unidentified vessel entered a restricted zone off Taiwan’s northwest coast, approximately 20 nautical miles north of the Yong’an District near Kaohsiung. Upon arrival, the Coast Guard tracked the vessel traveling three miles inside the restricted zone, ignoring repeated radio hails. When ordered to stop for inspection, the vessel attempted evasive maneuvers, zigzagging to avoid interception. Maritime Security Bulletin and Advisory Re: US Naval Forces Bombed Yemen's Hodeidah Airport (Airstrike Deemed Ineffective)(Houthis Still Maintain Full Military Capabilities) Issued By: Sanborn Analytics Date: March 23rd, 2025 Contact: [email protected] | Phone: (+1)(617)539-6114 Subject: Confirmed U.S. Naval Strikes on Hodeida Airport – Red Sea Region – Advisory for Maritime Traffic Sanborn Analytics issues this maritime security bulletin to advise the maritime shipping community and the armed naval forces at sea of continued military action in the Red Sea Region. Summary: On March 22nd, 2025, Yemen accused the United States of conducting airstrikes on the Hodeidah Airport, located on Yemen’s Red Sea coast. This follows recent U.S. military action announced one week prior, targeting Houthi military positions in Yemen. Al-Masirah TV, aligned with the Houthi government, reported that three airstrikes were conducted on the airport, attributing the actions to “American aggression.” Sanborn Analytics has independently confirmed the occurrence of airstrikes on Hodeidah Airport executed by U.S. Naval forces operating in the Red Sea region. Following aerial drone reconnaissance and human intelligence (HUMINT) assessments, Sanborn Analytics has determined the strikes to be ineffective in achieving substantial military degradation of Houthi operational capability. Advisory: Sanborn Analytics advises all maritime vessels operating in the Red Sea and adjacent waters to exercise heightened caution. While the effectiveness of the recent strikes is deemed limited, the potential for retaliatory actions by non-state actors remains. Vessels are advised to maintain vigilance, ensure secure communications, and adhere to route adjustments as advised by relevant naval authorities. Sanborn Analytics continues to monitor the security environment in the Red Sea and will issue updates as the situation develops.
