Sanaya Memorial Fund

The Berkeley-Haas EMBA Class of 2017…we each came into the program with a different purpose. For some, the search for a new career, a promotion or an education unlike what we’ve had in the past. For others, we wanted to build out skills and network. What we didn’t expect was the depth of the relationships that we’d make, the persistent and unrelenting personal growth and overall, the incredible transformation that we’d see in each and ourselves. In our first four terms, our classmates have experienced both blessings and tragedies: births, marriages, divorces, illnesses and deaths. Throughout the good and the bad, our class has stood together to support each other in ways that go well past the support expected from mere classmates. We are family. Haas has four Defining Principles that encompass the attitudes, objectives and leaders that go through the school. These principles resonate deeply with each of us, but the one that has particularly stood out in our great class is Beyond Yourself – the thought that our actions should be considered in terms of their impact on others and that we should seek opportunities as leaders and citizens to put larger interests above our own. With this in mind, we have started a fund in honor of a Haas Bear cub, Sanaya Shah, whose life was far too short, but in it she left us inspired with her strength and her sheer will to fight and overcome the challenges she faced. This fund will be used to issue grants to entrepreneurs or ventures involving Haas students who are underrepresented, have a venture with a social mission and/ or represent the characteristics of Sanaya, the dear soul OUR fund honors. Along with the grant, we also commit to provide mentorship to grant winners to ensure they have access to relevant industry advisors and can also provide office space as they work on their idea.
