The San Mateo County Medical Association (SMCMA) is an organization of more than 1,500 active and retired physician members and is the voice of medicine in San Mateo County. SMCMA was founded in 1905 and aims to maintain and improve the quality of medicine, provide services to the community, and to provide services to physician members.

First Case of Severe Mpox Strain Reported in San Mateo County The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed the first U.S. case of the clade I strain of mpox in San Mateo County, California. ?? Key Details: * The individual recently traveled from Africa, where there is an ongoing outbreak. * They are currently receiving treatment and isolating at home. * Public health officials are contacting anyone who may have been exposed. * No additional cases have been reported. ?? What is Clade I? This strain has historically been associated with more severe symptoms compared to clade II, but the CDC emphasizes that the risk to the general public remains low. As of November 1, 2024, all healthcare personnel and visitors in patient care areas of skilled nursing facilities are required to wear face masks during the designated winter respiratory virus period (November 1 to March 31). This mandate, set by the Health Officer, aims to protect vulnerable individuals during peak virus season. Limited exemptions apply. The San Mateo County Medical Association (SMCMA) recently participated in the 2024 California Medical Association House of Delegates (CMA HOD) meeting in Sacramento on October 26-27. The HOD, CMA’s primary policymaking body, focused on two major issues: Rural Health and Maternal Health Equity, with particular attention to obstetric deserts and reproductive health. Look out for CMA’s upcoming policy outcomes on these topics. The event also featured the inauguration of Dr. Shannon Udovic-Constant as the 2025 CMA President and the election of Dr. Rene Bravo as President-Elect. Representing District VII, the SMCMA delegation included leaders such as Cindy Cooper, MD, Connor Lundy, MD , and Executive Director Keith Darby, CAE, IOM.
