Kudos to the brilliant minds and collegial ideas shared at the annual in-person gathering of the Contemporary Art Museum Directors (CAMD). Co-hosted this year at San José Museum of Art & Cantor Arts Center, Stanford University — it was my pleasure with Veronica Roberts to welcome colleagues from around the nation to discuss the challenges facing art museum leaders today, view exhibitions and share future plans. I tip my hat to the inspiring work done by this impressive cohort, and those who could not attend, and the spirit of collaboration. A shout out to my fellow Steering Committee team Cybele Maylone & Hesse McGraw! #CAMD #contemporaryartmuseumdirectors

The San José Museum of Art (SJMA) will present "Beta Space: Patty Chang and David Kelley" from November 1, 2024 through June 1, 2025. Taking the form of an open laboratory, Chang and Kelley’s newest multimedia installation features their first inquiry into a site without human inhabitants: the deep sea. Organized by SJMA assistant curator, Juan Omar Rodriguez, Chang and Kelley’s exhibition explores the animal and mineral pasts, presents, and futures of the deep sea and urgently addresses the loops—of scientific discovery, resource extraction, and technological development—that connect us with the more-than-human.?

Downtown San José celebrated the opening of “Calder: at home, among friends” and “Still in Motion” with a live performance by Mild Monk & somn.ok. Over 350 people came together to see the exhibitions and commemorate this artist’s legacy. “Calder: at home, among friends” features intimate objects created by the artist, as well as smaller sculptures. “Still in Motion” celebrates the unfolding legacy of Calder through the work of Calder Prize awardees, whose groundbreaking contributions push the limits of sculpture to propel it into the twenty-first century. Both shows are open through August 3, 2025.?? ? Photos by Frederick Liang. ? 2024 Calder Foundation, New York / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York?

It takes a village to create an annual event to welcome everyone to the magical San José Museum of Art Gala + Auction! What a pleasure to honor Chitra Ganesh & Glenda Dorchak with superstar co-chairs Tammy Kiely & Nadia Ahmad, speakers Dipti Mathur, Robert Lindo, Matt Mahan and a rollicking art auction with Robbie Gordy. Raising significant funds to support exhibitions and education programs, our talented staff raised the bar on what a creative event can do -- with celebrations of birthdays, anniversaries and a 30-year tribute to Trustee Bill Faulkner. Love for community and creativity abounded, we are sincerely grateful for the support of the artists and galleries, all the generous sponsors and attendees, and huge heavy lift of the Board and Development Committee. Opens November 1, SJMA will present "Kambui Olujimi: North Star," an immersive exhibition that invites us to imagine a different way of being in the universe. Taking the deliberate absence of Black joy in Western art histories and visual culture as a point of departure, "North Star" explores the liberatory possibilities of weightlessness. "North Star" is Olujimi’s first solo museum exhibition on the West Coast and will feature large-scale watercolor and ink paintings, a site-specific mural, a film, and a new sculpture and video installation that comprise the artist’s most recent multidisciplinary project. The exhibition is organized by Lauren Schell Dickens, SJMA’s chief curator, and Juan Omar Rodriguez, SJMA’s assistant curator. "Kambui Olujimi: North Star" is made possible by the SJMA Exhibitions Fund, with lead support from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
