Meet Arts Commissioner Marcus Anthony Shelby! Each month throughout 2024, we will be highlighting one of our Arts Commissioners as part of our “Meet the Arts Commissioners” series. Commissioner Marcus Shelby sits on the Executive and Community Investments committees and is a composer, bassist, bandleader, and educator. His work focuses on the history, present, and future of African American lives, social movements, and music education. Shelby is the Artistic Director of Healdsburg Jazz, an artist in residence with the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, and a past resident artist with the San Francisco Jazz Festival and the Healdsburg Jazz Festival. Shelby is also the voice of Ray Gardener in the Oscar winning Disney Pixar film “SOUL” 2020. Shelby has served on the San Francisco Arts Commission since 2013. Meet Commissioner Abby Sadin Schnair! Each month throughout 2024, we will be highlighting one of our Arts Commissioners as part of our “Meet the Arts Commissioners” series. ? Commissioner Abby Sadin Schnair chairs the Civic Design Review committee and sits on the Visual Arts Committee and Executive Committee and is an architectural photographer with over 40 years of experience. Her photography has been published in Architect magazine, Architectural Digest and Architectural Record. ? Commissioner Schnair was appointed to the San Francisco Arts Commission in 2013, and previously served on the board of A.C.T. for 15 years until 2022 and is past chair of the A.C.T. MFA Conservatory board. She currently serves as a Trustee of California College of the Arts (CCA) and is part of the SF Advocacy for the National Museum of Women Artists. ? San Francisco Arts Commission Announces Installation of "Aurum" by Artist Duo HYBYCOZO in Mint Plaza Nearly 175 years after the start of the California Gold Rush, a new 12 x 13.5 ft., 2,000-pound sculpture is installed in Mint Plaza that connects the cosmic origins of gold with San Francisco’s history. SFAC is thrilled to announce the completed installation of "Aurum", a geometric stainless steel light sculpture created by artist duo Yelena Filipchuk and Serge Beaulieu of HYBYCOZO, that reflects gold’s journey through the universe and its important role in the cultural development of San Francisco. The illuminated sculpture, sited in Mint Plaza along Jessie Street between Fifth and Mint streets, is comprised of laser-cut, powder-coated stainless-steel sheets and LED’s, welded into 12 “cones”. The sculpture celebrates the intersection of art, science, and history by tracing gold's formation from the beginning of the universe to its role in shaping the city’s Gold Rush era.? Commissioner Jessica Rothschild, AIA, LEED AP sits on the Civic Design Review Committee and is an architect and an advocate for the arts in the built environment.?Her designs include community based civic buildings and a diverse range of higher education projects. In addition to her practice, Ms. Rothschild has taught the design of the built environment at UC Berkeley and CCA.?Her project, The Final(ly) House, was recognized with an Honor Award for Excellence by the AIA SF. The San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) is excited to announce Ebon Glenn, MBA will join the Arts Commission as the agency’s new Deputy Director of Programs! Ebon Glenn will begin his new role with the Arts Commission on September 3, and will report to Ralph Remington, Director of Cultural Affairs. “Ebon is a strategic and forward-thinking leader who brings extensive experience and a strong commitment to supporting underserved and underrepresented communities. He will be a tremendous asset to the Arts Commission as our new Deputy Director of Programs,” said?Ralph Remington, Director of Cultural Affairs. “His previous work within the City, along with his connections to a diverse range of art and cultural partners will be invaluable as we continue to build on our agency’s mission of championing the arts in San Francisco and while strengthening community partnerships.” In his new role as Deputy Director of Programs, Glenn will oversee the agency’s public-facing programs all programmatic staff, including the Community Investments team, which includes the grant making and art vendor programs; the Public Art team, which includes the Civic Art collection; the Galleries program; the Capital program. Prior to starting his career in public service, Glenn was the Owner Operator and Business Development Director of a successful airport retail business at San Francisco International Airport and San Jose Mineta International Airport from 2015 to 2019. He also served as the Operations Director for the African American Arts and Cultural District from 2019 to 2023. “I’m extremely excited and honored to join the San Francisco Arts Commission,” said Ebon Glenn. “I believe art is a powerful vehicle to amplify self-expression, diversity and unity. His work manifests innovative ideas into cultural movements at the crossroads of taste, feel, and experience. Commissioner Musleh firmly believes that art, music, technology, lighting and the social being converge side-by-side and through these values, he has owned and operated successful restaurants, bars, nightclubs, cafés and retail businesses. Today, Mayor London Breed joined representatives from the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) and CCC of San Francisco (Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco) to announce the launch of the Chinatown Artist Registry. Applications can be submitted online through the SFAC website RFQ page at https://lnkd.in/gfPism8b. The deadline to submit qualifications is September 11, 2024, by 11:59 p.m. PDT The Request for Qualifications (RFQ) is an unprecedented call for artists with connections to Chinatown who will be eligible for consideration for several upcoming publicly funded art projects in the neighborhood. Led by SFAC in partnership with CCC of San Francisco, the Chinatown Artist Registry will be used in the selection of artists to create and display artwork at three capital improvement construction projects taking place in Chinatown, including Portsmouth Square, Chinatown Public Health Center, and Chinatown Him Mark Lai Branch Library.? “The Arts Commission is honored to work closely with our community partners in Chinatown to incorporate new and exciting public art that speaks directly to, and is reflective of the neighborhood,” says Ralph Remington, Director of Cultural Affairs for the San Francisco Arts Commission. “Public art plays a pivotal role in shaping and enhancing the urban environment. By establishing a dedicated artist registry, we will be able to work directly with artists who have meaningful connections to Chinatown to create artwork that honors heritage and incorporates contemporary cultural expressions.”?
