The San Francisco Arts Commission is the City agency that champions the arts as essential to daily life by investing in a vibrant arts community, enlivening the urban environment and shaping innovative cultural policy. The Arts Commission envisions a San Francisco where the transformative power of art is critical to strengthening neighborhoods, building infrastructure and fostering positive social change. We believe the arts create inspiring personal experiences, illuminate the human condition and offer meaningful ways to engage with each other and the world around us. We imagine a vibrant San Francisco where creativity, prosperity and progress go hand in hand. We advance artists’ ideas to improve the quality of life for everyone through a united cultural sector whose contributions are vital and valued.

    Meet Commissioner Jessica Rothschild! Each month throughout 2024, we will be highlighting one of our Arts Commissioners as part of our “Meet the Arts Commissioners” series. Commissioner Jessica Rothschild, AIA, LEED AP sits on the Civic Design Review Committee and is an architect and an advocate for the arts in the built environment.?Her designs include community based civic buildings and a diverse range of higher education projects. In addition to her practice, Ms. Rothschild has taught the design of the built environment at UC Berkeley and CCA.?Her project, The Final(ly) House, was recognized with an Honor Award for Excellence by the AIA SF.     The San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) is excited to announce Ebon Glenn, MBA will join the Arts Commission as the agency’s new Deputy Director of Programs! Ebon Glenn will begin his new role with the Arts Commission on September 3, and will report to Ralph Remington, Director of Cultural Affairs. “Ebon is a strategic and forward-thinking leader who brings extensive experience and a strong commitment to supporting underserved and underrepresented communities. He will be a tremendous asset to the Arts Commission as our new Deputy Director of Programs,” said?Ralph Remington, Director of Cultural Affairs. “His previous work within the City, along with his connections to a diverse range of art and cultural partners will be invaluable as we continue to build on our agency’s mission of championing the arts in San Francisco and while strengthening community partnerships.” In his new role as Deputy Director of Programs, Glenn will oversee the agency’s public-facing programs all programmatic staff, including the Community Investments team, which includes the grant making and art vendor programs; the Public Art team, which includes the Civic Art collection; the Galleries program; the Capital program. Prior to starting his career in public service, Glenn was the Owner Operator and Business Development Director of a successful airport retail business at San Francisco International Airport and San Jose Mineta International Airport from 2015 to 2019. He also served as the Operations Director for the African American Arts and Cultural District from 2019 to 2023. “I’m extremely excited and honored to join the San Francisco Arts Commission,” said Ebon Glenn. “I believe art is a powerful vehicle to amplify self-expression, diversity and unity. Commissioner Nabiel Musleh sits on the Community Investments and Visual Arts committees and is a Palestinian American visual artist who has carved a deep niche in San Francisco culture and nightlife. From creating large-scale experiential installations to bringing new, unique dining experiences to our city, Commissioner Musleh has had a broad impact. His work manifests innovative ideas into cultural movements at the crossroads of taste, feel, and experience. Commissioner Musleh firmly believes that art, music, technology, lighting and the social being converge side-by-side and through these values, he has owned and operated successful restaurants, bars, nightclubs, cafés and retail businesses.     Today, Mayor London Breed joined representatives from the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) and CCC of San Francisco (Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco) to announce the launch of the Chinatown Artist Registry. Applications can be submitted online through the SFAC website RFQ page at https://lnkd.in/gfPism8b. The deadline to submit qualifications is September 11, 2024, by 11:59 p.m. PDT The Request for Qualifications (RFQ) is an unprecedented call for artists with connections to Chinatown who will be eligible for consideration for several upcoming publicly funded art projects in the neighborhood. Led by SFAC in partnership with CCC of San Francisco, the Chinatown Artist Registry will be used in the selection of artists to create and display artwork at three capital improvement construction projects taking place in Chinatown, including Portsmouth Square, Chinatown Public Health Center, and Chinatown Him Mark Lai Branch Library.? “The Arts Commission is honored to work closely with our community partners in Chinatown to incorporate new and exciting public art that speaks directly to, and is reflective of the neighborhood,” says Ralph Remington, Director of Cultural Affairs for the San Francisco Arts Commission. “Public art plays a pivotal role in shaping and enhancing the urban environment. By establishing a dedicated artist registry, we will be able to work directly with artists who have meaningful connections to Chinatown to create artwork that honors heritage and incorporates contemporary cultural expressions.”?

    New Artwork Alert! The San Francisco Arts Commission, in partnership with the Port of San Francisco, are pleased to announce the installation of a nine-foot-bronze sculpture, titled “As Sounds Turn to Noise”, by internationally renowned British artist?Thomas J Price?on Embarcadero Promenade between Pier 1 and the Ferry Building. “As Sounds Turn to Noise”, 2023, measuring 110 3/8” high x 47 1/2" wide x 32 3/4" deep, will be on site for a period of six months through January 2025, with the possibility of an extension.     ?? San Francisco Arts Commission Awards $15 Million In Grant Funding To 166 Local Artists, Arts Nonprofits, and Cultural Organizations for 2024-2025! The San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) is thrilled to announce a total of $15 million in grant funding has been awarded to support 159 local artists and arts nonprofits, and 7 cultural centers for the 2024-2025 grant cycle. Grant awards span 12 to 24 months, depending on the funding category. $11.3 million in grant funding has been awarded to 76 individual artists, 83 arts nonprofit organizations, $3.7 million in funding support has been awarded to 7 cultural centers.
