Lady of ??
Check out the latest episode of The Data Slice and get to know the “Lady of Fire”—a nickname Dr. Ilkay Altintas earned for her groundbreaking work using real-time data to predict and contain wildfires. ?? https://lnkd.in/g57647bV At UC San Diego, she is also the Chief Data Science Officer of the San Diego Supercomputer Center and the Founder and Director of the Workflows for Data Science (WoRDs) Center. Ilkay is also a DSA board member and she routinely testifies before Members of Congress and Senate as well as at the White House, providing instruction on the impact and value of national investment in science!

Despite its promise as a clean, reliable, and limitless power source, nuclear fusion remains an elusive goal due to the challenge of controlling its production. Researchers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), part of the UC San Diego School of Computing, Information and Data Sciences at UC San Diego are working to overcome this hurdle by exploring innovative methods to improve tokamak confinement. Recent simulations have revealed surprising results that challenge our understanding of plasma rotation and confinement, with significant implications for the design of future tokamaks. By optimizing these reactors, we can improve the efficiency and stability of the fusion reaction, bringing us closer to realizing the potential of fusion energy. The future of fusion energy is promising, with the potential to provide a nearly limitless source of clean energy. But overcoming the challenges of plasma confinement and turbulence is crucial to achieving this goal. The ongoing research in this field, including the work of the SDSC team, is a critical step towards unlocking the potential of fusion energy and creating a more sustainable energy future. #FusionEnergy #Sustainability #CleanEnergy #UCSD Image credit: DrPixel/Getty Images

The San Diego Supercomputer Center has a deep history in computing. Yesterday, HPCwire hosted a special luncheon to honor the inaugural HPCwire 35 Legends, an annual list recognizing 35 individuals who have profoundly shaped the high-performance computing (HPC) community. The luncheon celebrated the remarkable achievements of researchers, inventors, and executives who have driven advancements in technology, science, and innovation over the past 35 years. Among the legends on the HPCwire 35 Legends list are SDSC's founding director, Sidney Karin, and UC San Diego Professor Emeritus Larry Smarr.
