At Funders Together, we recognize the many challenges our region faces in the homelessness crisis, but we also seek to uplift and celebrate what's working.?? We recently joined the San Diego Housing Commission for an update on the City of San Diego’s homeless shelter system, including a key improvement to happen across the shelter system in the past year: the Universal Terms of Service. Here's what you should know: ?? Emphasizing dignity and autonomy for shelter residents, the Universal Terms of Service are meant to ensure that both clients and staff in shelters are fully aware of their rights and responsibilities, and that clients can expect consistent, safe, and respectful experiences when entering any City shelter. ?? Incorporating trauma-informed care, cultural competency, and anti-discrimination practices also helps to minimize the number of people who experience implicit or explicit bias, which can result in individuals being unnecessarily suspended from shelter access. (This can also cause people to self-select to leave a shelter and/or remain on the streets because of a past negative experience.) ?? The Universal Terms of Service are grounded in a Bill of Rights document first created by our colleagues (and grantee partners) at Lived Experience Advisers, a San Diego nonprofit led by individuals who have personal experience with homelessness. So let's take a moment to celebrate what's working. The City of San Diego and our San Diego Housing Commission are advancing plans to add a 210-bed shelter for women, families, and seniors in Downtown. ? This builds on the work we’ve already done over the past four years to more than double shelter options and help nearly 5,000 people move into housing. The proposed Rachel’s Promise Center for Women and Children would provide meals, showers, case management, life skills classes, and more. It will also accommodate residents from the soon-to-close Rachel’s Promise shelter while expanding capacity. This is about action and care—ensuring more people have a safe place to stay while receiving services that help them secure permanent housing. #Forward #ForAllofUs?

The SDHC Board of Commissioners has unanimously approved a new 210-bed homelessness shelter program for single adult women and women-led families with children. This new City-funded shelter will help to address a growing need in a setting that allows for more privacy for families and focuses on the unique needs of women and girls.
