The San Diego Food Bank's Senior Food Program (CSFP) provides income-eligible seniors aged 60 and older with a monthly 40-pound box of USDA-provided food items to help make ends meet. ???? In these boxes, seniors usually receive a combination of reduced-fat milk, instant non-fat milk, canned meats, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, canned soup, cheese, rice, beans pasta, fruit juice, oatmeal, and cereal. For many seniors in our region, living on a fixed income while facing rising costs can make it challenging to afford nutritious food - that's where the Senior Food Program comes in. By ensuring consistent access to food, the program helps participants maintain their health and independence, reducing the risk of chronic illness, supporting mobility, and enhancing overall quality of life. Congratulations to our January Employee of the Month, Joleen!?? Joleen was nominated by her peers for going above and beyond in her previous role as Nonprofit Services Coordinator where she helped agencies schedule appointments at the Miramar Food Center, assisted with online orders, and supported our partners with technical questions about our Oasis Insight database. "I enjoy working at the Food Bank because it's truly a place where I feel like I can collaborate with others who share the same mission to make a difference in people’s lives. It’s great knowing that our partners, and our community throughout the county, know they can rely on the San Diego Food Bank to lend a helping hand," Joleen explained. In her new role as Basic Needs Coordinator, Joleen oversees both the Diaper Bank and Period Supply Program where she coordinates orders and helps schedule pick-ups and deliveries for much-needed diapers and period supplies for our partners in the program. Thank you, Joleen, for all your hard work! We're lucky to have you on our team, supporting the mission of the San Diego Food Bank. ?? #EmployeeOfTheMonth #Kudos #FoodBank

This year's National Nutrition Month theme is "Food Connects Us." Now is a great time to reflect on how you connect with food and how food can be a connecting factor between family, friends, and culture. ???? This month, consider exploring the connection of food by: -Cooking a meal with your family or friends -Preparing a meal connected to your culture -Learning a new recipe from a different culture -Visiting your local Farmer’s market to interact with producers and learn how their products are grown -Donating culturally relevant food to the Food Bank EatRight.org and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics explain, "Sharing a meal is an opportunity to learn about its preparation, who made it and where the ingredients were sourced. Health, memories, traditions, seasons and access can all impact our relationship with food." We'd love to hear about your connection to food this Nutrition Month. Leave a comment below and let us know if you tried any of these tips. At 96 years old, Loretta is living a life defined by resilience and compassion. Born during the Great Depression, she learned early on the necessity of making do with what she had. As an adult, she spent years as a childcare expert, specializing in the care of newborn babies before they were adopted, and then transitioned into teaching. Now with severe vision impairment and living with her daughter, Pam, she continues to personify that same inner strength which has embodied her life. Thanks to the San Diego Food Bank’s Senior Food Program and Client Choice Food Pantry, she has found not only nourishment but also renewed independence and connection. ???? This month, we're spotlighting our wonderful partners at Grace Pantry! This organization seeks to lift, love, and serve their community through access to nutritious food. ???? Grace Pantry was created in 2024 as an extension ministry of Grace Church San Marcos. When the church began receiving calls from the community asking if they had any food to distribute, members of their team sprang into action and Grace Pantry was born. Today, they serve thousands of people every month and in 2024, they distributed more than 37,500 pounds of food to the community! Great work, Grace Pantry!
