A productive day for the Water Authority at the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California board meeting! Board Chair Nick Serrano and Board Chair Emeritus Mel Katz, who will be representing the Water Authority on the Met board moving forward, addressed the directors in Los Angeles. Chair Serrano once again emphasized affordability, collaboration and pursuing a settlement agreement as the focus of his chairmanship. Katz replaces Director Tim Smith, who is retiring from the Board and to whom the Water Authority owes a debt of gratitude to for his years of service to the region. Finally Water Authority Director Lois Fong-Sakai was elected to a second term as Met Board Secretary, further strengthening the ties between Met and SDCWA. All together these actions represent the continuation of a new era of partnership and progress between Met and SDCWA.

On #WorldToiletDay, we're reflecting on a meaningful milestone from 2022, when the Water Authority received a $3 million grant from the California Department of Water Resources to help low-income households access water-saving devices like high-efficiency toilets and smart irrigation systems. This initiative is a powerful example of how working together can make sustainable solutions accessible to all. Rebates are still available - visit https://lnkd.in/gFXAZXZs to learn more!

This week, the Colorado River Board of California (CRB) toured various sites along the Colorado River near the border of Arizona and California, with a focus on conservation efforts in the desert Southwest region. The tour included stops at the Imperial Dam, Laguna Division Conservation Area, Yuma East Wetlands Conservation Area, Pilot Knob Power Plant, Morelos Dam, and the Yuma Desalting Plant. Tour stops also included joint Fort Yuma Quechan Indian Tribe and Bard Water District projects designed to increase water efficiency and service to agricultural water users in the region. CRB Vice Chair and Water Authority Director Jim Madaffer thanked the Quechan Indian Tribe for hosting the CRB on their tribal land. CRB brings together water agencies in California to work collaboratively toward protecting California's river supplies and develop consensus-based solutions to the issues affecting the Colorado River.

Thanks to Board Chair Nick Serrano for spending his morning with staff from San Diego County Water Authority talking about water, public service and priorities for the coming year. Serrano is the youngest chair in Water Authority history and the first to meet and greet staff at an all-hands meeting.

"Dam" that's a lot of goats! The City of San Diego's Public Utilities Department contracted with a local company to have more than 250 goats clear dry brush at Miramar Reservoir in the Scripps Ranch community. This process helps reduce fire risk and allows room for inspection of the dam. The city operates and maintains dams for nine reservoirs that support the water supply for the City of San Diego. Did you know? Under human supervision, several dozen goats can efficiently and safely clear an acre of brush per day??
