It’s challenging to get young people to understand that marijuana is a drug, is dangerous, and can negatively impact their developing brains. Today’s marijuana is more powerful than it used to be. Decades ago, one could experiment and have less adverse effects. But today, with the high concentration of THC, the ingredient that gets people high, and the possibility it could be laced with fentanyl, the risks of using marijuana today are so much higher. And because the teenage brain is still developing, marijuana interferes with development and impacts memory, reasoning, and the ability to control behavior. Physicians are sounding the alarm bells when it comes to marijuana. Listen to two local doctors in I Choose My Future - Vaping, THC and Nicotine: Revelation and Inspiration https://bit.ly/48q18ES

"One life is worth saving." Rocky Herron shared his I Choose My Future message with hundreds of middle school students in San Marcos today, empowering them to make healthy choices and choose a future without drugs and vaping. Rocky doesn’t tell students to "just say no" but encourages students to make good choices by sharing his experiences as a drug enforcement administration agent and parent - how drugs are made, how dealers only care about making money, the harm that drug use can cause to the user and everyone around them, and how trying something just once could be deadly. He shows pictures and videos and tells students why he does this work – because he cares about young people and if he can help just one young person, it’s worth it. The need to make healthy choices doesn’t stop after Red Ribbon Week and neither does Rocky. Learn more about his in-person presentations and the videos series based on the presentations – in both English and Spanish – on the I Choose My Future/Yo Elijo Mi Futuro website. www.sdcoe.net/IChoose

Creating space for youth to develop agency and have positive youth leadership opportunities free of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and violence is important. For high school students, that place is Friday Night Live (FNL). FNL focuses on providing young people with a positive, safe, and supportive environment to develop leadership skills, build resiliency, and make healthy lifestyle choices. There are more than 60 FNL chapters in schools across the county and numbers are growing steadily. Activities are organized by youth to appeal to youth. Dances, haunted houses, community service, and social action activities, movie nights, and participation in advocacy for safe and healthy environments are just some of the activities that FNL youth both participate in and organize. When messages about making healthy choices are delivered by youth to their peers, they are often seen as more credible and relatable than when delivered by adults, and leads to greater engagement. Do you want to encourage your peers to make healthy choices free of drugs and alcohol? Reach out to FNL to learn more. https://bit.ly/4hexh6t
