Tribal Climate Resilience Specialist This role is responsible for performing activities related to SDBG’s culturally significant plant, climate resilience, and native plant research and restoration activities, particularly those conducted in collaboration with Tribal, Native, and Indigenous communities. This position will work collaboratively with the Jamul and Viejas Bands of Kumeyaay and Pala Band of Mission Indians in San Diego County, among others. ?? Agricultural Biodiversity Data Specialist The Agricultural Biodiversity Specialist is responsible for performing activities related to compiling, analyzing, and synthesizing information on food and agricultural biodiversity. San Diego Botanic Garden CEO Ari Novy was recently recognized by The Garden Club of America (GCA), and introduced as an honorary member in April 2024. Since 1916, the GCA has recognized the extraordinary achievements of more than 400 honorary members in the fields of horticulture or conservation, or whose knowledge and interests align with the GCA purpose. “At every stage of my career, I’ve been honored to work with the Garden Club of America to conserve plants and the environment, and help support the next generations of conservation and botanical professionals. I am deeply honored to be able to continue and deepen my long standing partnership with GCA," said Novy. The GCA is a nonpartisan, issue-oriented advocate for a beautiful, healthy planet. It is a nonprofit national organization recognized for its leadership in horticulture, conservation, creative arts, historic preservation, and environmental protection. On Feb. 27, SDBG hosted our first Medicinal Plants Research Symposium, bringing together leading researchers from academia, industry and nonprofits, along with Native American tribal governments and members, and other community partners to celebrate accomplishments from the first phase of our collaborative Medicinal Plants Project, and look ahead at the future of medicinal plants research. Launched in 2022 with funding from The Conrad Prebys Foundation, the project was initiated to create the first medicinal plant collection and consortium of its kind in the U.S., bridging researchers with Indigenous knowledge holders and industries in a way that isn’t conventionally done to ultimately uncover new and expanded plant-based medicines. We are proud to be one of four gardens nationwide participating in the Rare Plant RaMP (Research & Mentoring for Post-Baccalaureates in Biological Sciences) program. Developed to research the global decline of plant biodiversity while also expanding opportunities for demographics historically excluded from STEM, this one-year paid program offers post-grads experience working directly with our science and conservation team. The program is intended for first generation scholars, individuals from low-income households, and those from under-resourced institutions. Applications are open through March 15, 2024.
