STEM Week Press Conference Highlights Commitment to Building San Antonio’s Future STEM Workforce San Antonio faces a critical challenge in preparing its workforce for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Despite Hispanics making up 20% of the nation’s youth population, they account for only 2% of the STEM workforce, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Nationally, only 12% of Hispanics earn a 2-year STEM degree, and just 8% achieve a 4-year STEM degree. As a city poised to lead in cybersecurity, military STEM careers, and other high-demand fields, this gap must be addressed. During yesterday’s press conference on the steps of San Antonio’s City Hall, the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SAHCC) announced the kickoff of San Antonio STEM Week, emphasizing the city’s commitment to bridging this gap. This initiative includes the 14th Annual CORE4 STEM Program, taking place on November 19th and 20th. The program, the largest STEM conference in San Antonio, will inspire over 2,000 middle school students from five inner-city districts: South San, Harlandale, Southwest, Edgewood, and San Antonio ISD. CORE4 STEM provides these students—many from historically underserved communities—with hands-on, interactive experiences designed to spark interest in STEM careers. The program is made possible through partnerships with local businesses, governmental agencies, and institutions of higher education. SAHCC President & CEO Luis Rodriguez thanked the program’s key partners, including Port San Antonio, Toyota, CPS Energy, H-E-B, Alamo Colleges, and SAWS, for their vital support. “These partners help our students see the diverse and exciting career opportunities available in STEM,” Rodriguez said. “This program is about building San Antonio’s future workforce and ensuring our city’s continued economic success.” With initiatives like STEM Week and CORE4, the SAHCC is taking bold steps to ensure a more diverse and prepared STEM workforce, paving the way for a stronger, more inclusive economy. https://lnkd.in/gRRbSJgG
