U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and U.S. Rep. Colin Allred dug into each other's most vulnerable points on the debate stage Tuesday night. The 60-minute showdown was their only planned debate ahead of the Nov. 5 election.? ? Allred, seeking to define himself for the first time to many Texas voters, took aim squarely at Cruz's Senate record, calling the two-term Republican the “exact opposite of me.” He described Cruz as a grandstanding partisan who helped strip Texas women of emergency abortion care.? ? He pointed to the senator's trip to Cancun during Winter Storm Uri and at one point described taking off his suit jacket on the House floor during the Jan. 6 riots in 2021 in preparation to defend the chamber from an angry mob while Cruz was “hiding in a supply closet.”? ? Cruz sought to brand Allred as “radical and extreme” and repeatedly accused the Dallas congressman of avoiding questions about his own voting record. The Texas Republican regularly compared Allred to Vice President Kamala Harris and claimed Allred had turned his back on the border crisis and the state's massive oil and gas industry.? https://bit.ly/4dNkiG0
