Dot Block, once complete, will be the largest single development in Dorchester’s history comprised of housing, restaurant and retail, and public open space. Phase two of the project, a five-story complex, will consist of 84 apartments, all of which will be affordable housing units. ? We would like to commend the city for their creative partnership, and look forward to working with state and federal officials to identify additional resources needed to launch construction and advance phase two of Dot Block. Bold Types: How do you construct a building on air? If you’re Steve Samuels, it takes both patience and engineering prowess. Samuels is both principal and namesake of Samuels & Associates, a longtime Boston-based development firm that recently completed the construction of the Lyrik building at the intersection of Newbury and Boylston streets, the first “air-rights” construction project over the Massachusetts Turnpike in over 40 years. Placemaking is at the core of everything we do at Samuels & Associates. ? In a recent?Bold Types?interview with Janelle Nanos for Boston Globe Media, Steve Samuels shared the vision, history, and process behind Lyrik, Boston’s first air-rights project in over 40 years, spanning the Massachusetts Turnpike. ? Over a decade in the making, Lyrik has redefined the intersection of Newbury and Boylston Streets, transforming the Back Bay landscape. The project now hosts the headquarters of CarGurus and the LEGO Group, premier retail destinations like Rivian and Avra Estiatorio (coming soon), and the citizenM hotels. ? At the heart of the project is a new two-tiered public plaza designed to host activations, pop-ups, and community events. This space was realized through a collaborative permitting process, incorporating invaluable input from the Back Bay community. ? “Listening to people is one of the most important parts of getting the building done,” said Steve Samuels. “We believe deeply in Boston’s future and set out to create a space that seamlessly blends business, retail, and leisure, enhancing our communities for years to come.” ? Lyrik opened its two towers, one home to?citizenM hotels and the largest hotel in their portfolio, and the other home to anchor tenant CarGurus, who welcomed 1,000 Gurus to their new headquarters this fall. The two buildings are connected by a multi-level public plaza, where over 150 days of sunsets have been watched from the second level viewing deck. ? We also celebrated the completion of the first phase of Washington Village, which delivered South Standard, a state-the-art, all electric building that added over 200 units of housing to the community, and The Green at Washington Village, a vibrant open green space where neighbors gathered to enjoy outdoor fitness, free concerts, and more.? ?
